New Xp Update Reverts Shell To Original

Just noticed that after installing the new windows XP updates (particularly KB821557) PC reverts the modded icons back to original. I believe it replaces the modded windows shell. System restore worked like a charm.

Yeah, that freaking pissed me off.

It makes sense though, they might be updating it. I'd rather have security.

simply use replacer and you're all set in no time.

not if you want an updated more "secure" shell32.

what would they change there anyways?

drats! I wish I would have known this about two hours ago, thank goodness I had my modded shell32 backed up.

that's weird. i updated mine, but my shell32.dll didn't reveert to the default one.

Most of these security updates can be bypassed by simply installing a good FireWall application. I use ZoneAlarm and I have acidently got a few buggs on my second system and it notified me right away that something was trying to access the internet.

Your other alternative is to get the updated file and change its icons over to the ones you want. It all depends on how much you want to "Trust Microsoft" for there security updates verus using a security program that does the job for them. I myself as a profesional PC repair tech choose to do the security for my system my way and not Microsoft's way. I have also seen a few times that these security patches can zap your WPA file and force you to reactivate Windows XP all over again.

Its a pain but it doesnt take that long to redo a shell32, now if you have to do a shell and cpls and dlls well thats a *****. >.
