Micro$oft says that you won't have to re-register if you only make 3 hardware changes. But I've heard one change that they had to re-register. I'm glad I got a hold of an OEM. NO REGISTERING!

I forget the specifics, but it's generally at least a certain number of changes within a certain period of time with the exception of one or two things (of which ISTR the network card being one).
I think I recall reading that both the network and graphics cards were considered "major upgrade components" by WPA, purely because the combination of the MAC address of the NIC and some specs of the graphics card allow the system to be almost uniquely identified (motherboard is another, I believe).
Changing any of these within a 6 month(?) period will mean that you need to re-activate windows, and you're given a whole 3 days to do re-activations... I may be a little out, but I think it's something like that.
Conversely, a hard disk isn't considered a major upgrade, even if it's a fresh install of Windows 
Now who was it that said upgrading didn't cause problems? 
Sorry to gloat, I was in a similar situation. This is just Microsoft being assholes. You didn't do anything wrong.
Now, do they expect you to pay another license fee?

I done that once with Kaliedoscope and Mac OS 9 once before... Start menu, no menu bar at the top, the look and everything - and I hated it

That's odd. I have Windows XP Home retail and i've changed several components without such trouble. I even swapped the mobo and CPU without hassle.
i remember after i bought my computer (parts put together with what i wanted, but i "had to have xp" with it (package crap), and as i disslike windows and always mess about i reinstalled it 4 times or so..
Then i got up a message upon the next reinstall that i had used up my "limit" and had to call in and activate it via phone.
I *****ed at the person in the other end so mutch and so long,that i think he was on the brink of a breakdown before he handed over the code,and appologized.
After this i reinstalled windows oh 6 times? (like clean os :baby: ), and i havent got a warning yet.
Mabye i now got unlimited reinstalls!

Yeah changing a video card and a nic, would be a major change enough for the activation warning to pop up...
Infact, changing the CPU alone is enough to cause it to pop up... I know, Its happened to me.
FYI: Home edition doesn't do this, only Pro does
