My first (maybe THE first) Y'z Dock Theme

Hey all. I got to messing around a little and created a theme for Y'z Dock called FlameDock beta 0.1. As you might have guessed by the name, it replaces the boring rectangle dock background with flames. There is beginning to be a movement in the real OS X to give the dock themes (check out iheartny.com for more details on that), so I figured that a theme for Y'z Dock was a logical step. Here is the theme in action!

Note that it is a BETA theme, as the whole dock theme idea is still pretty new (then again Y'z Dock is pretty new) If you use the theme, please email me back and let me know how it performed and also include any suggestions you might have. Also, if you have a Y'z Dock/Aqua/Skinning site and would do me the huge favor of hosting my themes, it would be GREATLY appreciated.

well I've made a theme myself when it first came out but I never made another one after it because of the limitations of it and if I am right your theme does not display correctly on the sides without the .ini file edited I'm I right? maybe I didn't mess with it enough?

actually, i modified the theme. The background is one large straight across .png file-no tiling. I tried using tiled images, but they were simply too hard (I DID have troubles on both left and right sides, btw ) . I know a large, straight across .png file isn't necessarily quite right either, which is why the theme is still in beta stage. It seems to work well now, we'll see what happens...probably more tweaks on the way.

I've heard people say that large bg png images in the dock make it run slower but the bg image I made awhile back was large aswell and was not tiled and for some reason I could only get it to work real good with the right > side o0

Great work. I never thought on customizing that part of the dock. You know what would be cool? a grass-like dock background.

Just a few notes comcerning the two themes:

-Both FlameDock beta 0.2 and Grass beta 0.2 will be released either tonight or tomorrow.

Regarding performance:

-I am still sticking to my intial idea of a one image background. I realize this slows down the dock's performance somewhat, but I have found some interesting facts. Usually the background is comprised of a .png image with no interlacing. That is what is featured on FlameDock and Grass betas 0.1. However, if the .png IS interlaced, the dock's performance increases slightly. What is even MORE interesting, however, is that a non-interlaced .gif image boosts performance considerably, to the point where magnification is nearly as smooth as a tiled .png. I have yet to try an interlaced gif, and if that boosts performance even more, you can bet this format will be the foundation for all of my future themes, as will anything that boosts the dock's performance.

send the 0.2 and 0.1 themes to me at dbznjapan@hotmail.com and I will up them at 2 different locations so that you don't have to constantly send them to people through email. I dunno how much space is left in my email account but if it isn't enough then get on msn or aim if you have it and send it through that but I won't be checking my email or getting on a chatting thing until around 3:30-4:00

Hey everyone! I regret to say that I am suspending the e-mailing of the themes for the time being-not to worry though, the themes should be ready to download from a web site soon. The official releases thus far include

Just a reminder, it is VERY important that I get some kind of feedback from those of you using the released themes. I can't improve the themes without feedback! I of course weighed whether or not to include the WTC towers in the New York, NY theme. I came to the conclusion that to NOT include them would be to deny the most imposing feature of the New York skyline for over 25 years.

That's where I'm coming from on that subject.

As far as download links for the themes, there never were any. I manually emailed the themes out until it became too much work. Right now, I am waiting to have them posted on a web site where they will be availible for download. Thanks for your patience!
