Aqua-Soft ForumsI got a HP Pavilion 8650c a while ago and it came with a Samsung SD-608 dvd rom. now that i have xp the dvd player dosnt work, does anyone know where i can get new drivers for this model

doesn't look like much.
you said the dvd player doesn't work. maybe you could try another dvd player, or get the dvd decoder so you can watch it in some other player like wmp.
the dvd drive dosnt recognize any dvd's and win xp just calls it a cd rom drive
oh, i see. did you just upgrade to xp or something?
if you install xp, it automatically detects and installs the correct ones for the drives, peripherals, etc. you could probably try disconnecting the drive and then reconnecting it, or maybe a reinstall so it automatically detects it.
have you tried going to the device manager and updating drivers, rolling back (if you tried installing other ones), or uninstalling? i'm not sure, but maybe if you uninstall it, xp will automatically reinstall drivers. i'll check.

i'd check drivers, firmware, etc. apparently, this seems to be a common problem with xp and the samsung drive. if you google your drive model, you'll see what i mean.

First of all sorry for my bad english.
I'm not sure its good to replace the drive b4 making sure what the real problem is
(Choice is yours, anyway). If you just have upgraded to winxp i suspect that was windows problem. Somehow it doesn’t recognize your drive correctly. Actually, in most cases, your optical drive (dvd-rom, cdrom drive) doesn’t need any additional driver to be installed since windows already have built-in capability to support these types of drives. So downloading the driver for your dvd-rom drive is unnecessary.
To check whether this is the WINDOWS problem or not do this:
1. Uninstall the dvd drive from the device manager (start>control panel>system >hardware>device manager)
2. shut down your pc.
3. Disconnect ide & power cable from the dvd-rom drive
4. Boot up your pc
5. Check whether windows still detect the drive (Windows shouldn’t detect the drive since it was disconnected - if windows STILL detect it, there must be something wrong with your windows)
6. Shut down your pc again.
7. Now, you have to change the drive to slave (if it’s originally master) or change it to master (if it’s originally slave). Connect both ide & power cables back too. If you are using the same ide cable to connect to both dvd drive and hard drive, you have to do this also to your hard drive.
8. Boot up your pc.
9. Check whether your pc detect your drive correctly.
Notes: It’s better to reformat your pc and make fresh clean windows installation.
