ok... waited and waited and waited, finally got the newly released pack sp1 installer put on my fresh new pooter and i'm at great 'fork in the road, which path in the forest' type of decision making junction. what's safe to install from the win update site and what's going to screw me all up or start me all over. can anyone share any experiences of frustration that they had to help me out.

i remember there being some sort of performance problem with 811493, so i haven't installed that one, but i've gotten all the other updates and my computer works fine.
i would say that the updates, in general, do more good than harm.
I've installed every update on Windows Update, and my computer runs great. The slowdown bug with the 811493 hotfix has been updated and the bug is gone, so it's safe to install.
updates are a pain, I always delay them and it keeps bugging me
I also install any updates possible at any given time and my comp works fine. I wouldnt "stay away" from any updates but you should install any. :yamaca:

Should I update the nVidia driver from WindowsUpdate? I think I've already had an up-to-date driver (6.14.104469), and the driver on the WindowsUpdate site is dated Augest. >.<

you csn grab the latest driver from nvidia directely, 45.33 I think.
Best practice is to test the patches in a non-production environment (for me, friends computers do fine, he he) then deploy them once you know you're safe.
I personally install ALL of them, even if you find some have small bugs it's better to at least know you're up to date and don't have any security issues. I have never had a problem with any of them.
My love/hate relationship with the Windows Update site:
The problem, as I see it, is you've modded XP with the dlls of your choice and everything looks hunkydory but then you just have to run that update that seems so critical and Boom! you've lost all your customisations!
You then spend the next few nights away from your loved ones and try to figure out how to get everything back to the way it was before giving up and retrieving your last ghost session!

I usually stick to with the stuff that is marked Critical... as for the other updates, I really don't need the Fax Journal viewer crap or MSN 4.7 update.
If you stick with the critical stuff you should be ok.
As for the others, it's purely subjective. Take what you want and leave the other crap behind.
As for the driver updates, I've never had any issues with them.
They are provided by the vendor to Microsoft, so they are legit.
I have not gotten a single update from M$. I'm on 56K, disabled preview in OE so it doesn't download the email right away and am logged in as a power user not admin.I do have N A-V running and constantly updating. Not really safe but does save me time than to install 30+ MB of CRITICAL UPDATES than M$ puts out (hehe, "puts out").

thanks friends for your advise... i decided to get the important ones, ESPECIALLY THE JOURNAL VIEWER!!! and let's not forget moviemaker 2 (it's what everyone in the fast paced hollywood biz is using to throw together movies)
