I'm planning on a iBook G3 800 12", but I have some question for specialist.
1) how is a G3800 powerfull compared to a PC...
2) will panther run on a G3 800 ?
and with 128 Mo of RAM ?

Well it's good that your buying a mac 
1. not sure about the speed
2. 128mb of ram will run it but not even close to full beauty get at least 256.
I have an iBook 900, which came installed with 128MB of RAM. It was slow, sluggish, and if I wanted to run more than one app at once, was unuseable.
You must get at least 384MB of RAM, or preferably max it out at 640MB. Mine is maxed out, and runs very well now. Running OS X with 128MB is simply impractical.

I dont think hes going for a g3 because he preffers them over the newest g4's with 17'' screens, not everyone has enough money to go out and get one of those (like me)

its a good machine if you're not doing too much video editing and 3d rendering.
And MAX OUT THE RAM! This is crucial for ANY machine running OS X.
I know MacOSX can play DivX movies...but can it play XviD movies ?
Does anyone watch his XviD movies on a mac ?
Im pretty sure they can play Xvid.
Now on speed, we dont need a flame war over this but IMO:
It doesn't matter if the G3-800 is faster than its PC counterpart. What matters is if it is fast enough FOR YOU.
Computers have gotten so fast that any new computer you buy today will be able to handle desktop work (internet, word processing, etc) WITH EASE.
If you are looking to edit video, you might want to go with something more powerful, but otherwise, I doubt a 3.2Ghz P4 will load a web browser much faster.
I'd love to help you on this, but the fastest mac I've been on is 400mhz :shy:
However the guys over at http://www.macfora.com/ are mac experts, and they are extremely friendly too. They will most definetly be able to help you.

a program called Video LAN Client (VLC) is one the best programs ive seen for OS X, it plays just about all formats (ofcourse it has problems with Windows Media Format)

contra, i keep forgeting, isnt VLC have an Mplayer port at its core? or was that something else?
I dont think so, but mplayer and VLC are both open source, so it could be possible.
I hate VLC 0.6 by the way. Too buggy, but thats on Linux, its probably better in OSX (everything is).
About "speed", I agree with contrasutra.
It depends what you gonna do with it, a powerbook is always recommended, if you're gonna do some music with your mac.
I've almost bought a powerbook 1g, but I eventually bought a vintage guitar.

Frankly I was unimpressed with both mPlayer and VLC - at least in their current forms on X.
I look forward to later versions, however, as they both had great potential, and were able to play certain files well. For an overall video playback quality though, Quicktime can't be beaten.
