Macish.org Coming Soon To A Monitor Near You!

Greetings all.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is David Eglin, known around here as o0o The DEEJ o0o. I am responsible for starting up a website devoted to pooling all skins (or as many as humanly possible) of a maculation-specific nature, into one place. This website is called Macish.org and a temp page outlining our objectives etc can be found here.

I am posting here to try and drum up as much support as possible for the up-coming site. We will need help with the set up and running of such a resource, obviously, and the support and endorsement of all you people who keep the likes of us happy with the magnificent skins you make! ANYONE who has comments to make about the project, please feel free to post here.

Skin makers: I understand that you may not want traffic taken away from your own sites, so it will be possible to post previews of any skin you upload to our site and have it link to a skin file hosted on your own website, or maybe even to a page on your server (This would need negotiating).

Community leaders: I understand that you will not want yet another site competing with you in this field, and this is not our intention here. We are simply looking to provide a free host for mac related skins, and a central resource where community members can come looking for mac-specific skins, rather than trawling through all the irrelevant stuff on wincustomize etc.

Ideas? Comments? Either post here, or get in contact... PM, Email, AIM, ICQ or MSN... I'll answer ASAP to any questions or comments.

Hope to have your support in this venture... Please bear in mind that this kind of thing takes time and money... I just thought that it may be useful to have a site like this in the community.

Cheers.

Looks good to me and I've added it to my favourites for later use.

Good luck with the venture.

#62800

Sounds good, it'll be nice to have a place to find all the best skins available instead of searching around dozens and being dissapointed with old broken links.

Added to favourites so I don't forget. :)

#62805

Great idea! :own: I can't wait to see the site when it opens.

#62811

yes, added to my favorites too, if you want ill post any and all skins i've got ;)

#62812

@ chino:

Thanks. However, we're committed to not treading on anyone's toes, so only skins that we have permission to host will be featuring on the site. If of course the skins are made by you, then that is a different matter :)

So to all you skin makers... We need your permission... so please please please get in touch!

Cheers all

The site looks well done, but is it really necessary? Just look at the links site on Aqua-soft or Aquaxp, theres LOADS of sites like this.

I just don't want another Aqua-Source. ;)

#62826

The site is very clean, not too musch color or graphics, very easy on the eyes. I agree with contra on the whole "theres LOADS of sites like this". Maybe you could get something that would be origional to the Aqua Community in supplement to all the Aqua skins under one domain, be creative. Sorry, that's all the advice that I have for today, good luck with all means though.

And if AquaXP goes down again? So many skins were lost it was silly. I'd appreciate another dedicated site that stocks just a collection of Aqua styles so we don't have to search around the dozens of Aqua themed sites to find good skins with links that work.

#62838

Aquaxp.com hosts like 10 files. How many were lost?

#62851

I meant earlier when alot of people had files hosted there.

#62853

exactly, contrusta...aquaxp had only 10 files.

No site has ever managed to have a lot of files and links to only aqua related skins. The best perhaps was winmac or somthing like that and even then at the most it had about 14 working links to programs or skins that were aqua related. If this website works out and you plan to continue it, then i think it would be a great idea. But if your one of those people who start something and never finish then i don't think theres any point in making people hope. I want this website. (Y)

#62854

Congratulations The DEEJ, I want to be suprised when the site is open. :naughty:

Thats why places like wincustomize.com or DeviantArt exist.

We are forums basically. Go to an already established place for a host.

There are plenty of "content full" sites out there. Just look at Icemans site, you can completly transform your computer just from his files.

EDIT:

OK, 10 things, and Alilms.

Poor Alilm.

10?

anyway.. I though that the other website that godpunk openned was for this also? themedock?

#62869

FYI:

Themedock is great so far as it goes... but it is specifically for dock skins/icons. Macish.org will cater right accross all (or as much as possible) software used to make windows more mac like :)

Cheers

Well, I'm still sticking with ya on yer new concept, despite the odd one or two negatives. Yes, you can convert your entire PC to a Mac look via Ice's website, and a fantastic job he has done too.

However, I think even he will concede that he provides only one of the possible Mac looks. A subtle difference here and a subtle difference there and you have another Mac look and feel.

Hell, if there was only one Mac look and feel then we wouldn't need sites at all. Stick up one theme and we're all good to go. No more ports needed. That clearly isn't the case.

Ergo, the more variety and avenues exist, the better for all methinks. I know, me and my liberal ways...

#62902

I think you should go for it also sounds great

Yes, that's exactly how I'd like to spend my time- running a search at Wincustomize or DeviantArt and wading through 20+ pages of results, half of which have nothing to do with aqua or OS X. <_<

And Iceman's site hasn't been updated in who knows how long...I don't even know if those modded system files are SP1 complient. Besides, Iceman doesn't host the several apps, skins, themes, docklets, icons, wallpapers, etc. that our community releases.

Go for it, The Deej. I'm surprised someone hasn't done it sooner.

#62928

Fine, I guess its OK.

I still remember when there were LOADS of Aqua-hosting sites out there. I guess times have changed.

Just don't start a forum. Look what happened to AquaXP. ;)

Fine, I guess its OK.

I'm sure your blessing will mean much to them.

So any sort of time frame on this new site? And are you going to be able to host files as well as invite posters to link to their own sites?

#62942

Instead of starting a whole new site, why not just have some text and some links? And then some more text and links and more text and links. Keep it nice and smallish.

I figured it would. ^_^

I complain a lot. This was me saying i wouldn't complain too much.

#62944

Cheers for the comments, guys :)

Time frame: Kinda depends on how long all the back end stuff takes... like I said before, I'm no PHP whizz yet... But we're aiming for a launch ready for Xmas... Be prepared for that to drop back a litle though...

Hosting: Yes, we plan to be able to host files as well as link to them. Obviously we do have bandwidth restrictions, but hopefully we'll be able to deal with that as and when it comes. Our hosts are pretty flexible so we should be able to work something out on that front if we need the extra bandwidth.

Forum: No, no general forum... Just one for site specific news and releases and feedback. No general discussion, aqua discussion etc. Like I said, we don't want to compete with Aqua-Soft or AquaXP.

Hope that answers a few queries.
