Cease And Desist Emails

Not that this is anything aqua related but i got a cease and desist email.

Here's what the supposed attorney from John Wiley & Sons sent me

I am an attorney for John Wiley & Sons, Inc., a global publisher of books,
CDRom, journals, and other products. Among the works we publish are
the solutions manuals for Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics, Fundamentals
of Heat and Mass Transfer, Fundamentals of Thermodynamics, Fundamentals
of Physics and Fundamentals of Machine Component Design (the "Work").
All rights in the Work are owned by Wiley.
Wiley grants professors the limited, non-transferable license to use the
Work in connection with courses for which the related textbook has been
adopted. Sale or distribution of the Work is not authorized. It is come
to our attention that you are offering this Work for sale on Amazon.com in
violation of our rights. Your actions constitute copyright infringement
and subject you, and all other parties involved with such infringement, to
the remedies provided under the copyright law. These remedies include
injunctive relief, monetary damages, an accounting of your profits and
payment of our costs and attorneys' fees.
Accordingly, we hereby demand that you: (i) immediately cease and desist
from any and all infringing uses of the Work, including without limitation
offering the Work for sale on Half.com or on any other website or in any
other forum; (ii) provide written assurances that you have complied with
the foregoing and that you will refrain from making any use of Work in the
future without our authorization. This may be submitted via email.
Wiley considers your use of the Work to be a serious infringement of our
rights and we intend to pursue this matter vigorously in the event that you
do not promptly comply with these demands. Unless we receive, within 3
days from the date of this email, the written assurances demanded above, we
will take all actions we deem necessary to protect our valuable rights
fully.
Our demands in this letter do not waive or prejudice any rights or remedies
we may have in respect of this matter, all of which we expressly reserve.

Things to take note of... his name (John Smith) and his email (wileyprotection@HOTMAIL.COM)

what was i selling on half... written solutions to textbook problem which i bought from this other guy on half.com who btw ripped me off.

This letter doesn't looks formal at all to me. On top of that, the e-mail looks fishy. Registered companies have their own e-mail address for business use.

It's a law firm, doesn't it sounds fishy when a company uses hotmail.com adress?

If you want to confirm this matter, find out the company's phone number and call the office directly.

If there's no company address provided, then this has gotta be a fake.

Three other things make me think it's not genuine:

1. "Among the works we publish are the solutions manuals for Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics, Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer, Fundamentals of Thermodynamics, Fundamentals of Physics and Fundamentals of Machine Component Design (the "Work")."

That amount of detail just wouldn't be needed. It almost seems as though it's been placed there to lend some credibility. Why would you care what other "works" they have under their belt?

2. "This may be submitted via email." Highly unlikely. Since anyone can sit at your computer and respond in e-mail. It doesn't have your signature.

3. An e-mail is akin to a fax, in that confirmation of sending is not a confirmation of receipt. Were it not for your public display of the mail, how would they know you even received it?

For my next trick, I'll take a wild guess and say that there was no telephone number with the e-mail?

Having said that, they could just be yet another crap pleonastic law firm.
