Changing "file Type" Icons

as the topic, which .dll are they in? i can't find them, especially for zip file and Word Document file. anyone? thanks! :rolleyes:

Are you talking like, .mpg, .jpg, .txt files, that type of files? or something else??

If you are talking about those, Open any folder, then got to Tools>Folder Options. Click on the File Types tab and then click on any file type you want to change the icon for, then click on Advanced. In there it will open up and there will be a button that says Change Icon. Pick an icon and you're all set.

yea um i tried that and it did everything exept my drives! its a good method but how do u change drive icons? oh and how do u convert .png to .ico?

to change drive icons. you can put a small file and icon in the root of the drive.

in notepad.

make a file called autorun.inf

in this file should be :

[AutoRun]

icon=autorun.ico,0

you can name the icon anything. but , unless you are using an icon from a ICL (icon library) you need to have the comma followed by Zero. (this tells windows where to look in the file for the icon image)

this doesn't work immediatly.

you have to re-mount the drive to change the icon thisway.

(this means restarting windows)

if you happen to have a usb harddisk (as i do) just un plug it. and put it back in.

this works on my computer. i hope it works on yours..

if not.. the icons for drives are stored in Shell32.dll..

this is hard to mess with in XP..

there is also a way to change the icons via the registry.

but MS has turned this off in XP. *Grrr*

i am looking at a work around. and will post it when i have it working..

what about the second question? how do u convert png to ico?
