Wireless Routers

Hi guys I am trying to get a wireless router for my notebook but I am not sure which one to go for. There are many choices out there but not sure which one is more reliable.

I am directing my questions to either those who are using wireless option or to those who have some experience and more knowledge about the wireless routers and their intricate world.

Also, is there any compatibility issues between routers and cards?

any insights or suggestions will be much appreciated. (Y)

aside from Apple's Airport or Airport Extreme (), I think D-Link and Linksys are pretty good.

Is it 802.11b or 802.11g ?

And Airport is compatible with PC's as well. As are Linksys and D-Link. :rolleyes:

I've made some research and i learned that 802.11g are better than 802.11b

I could be wrong but what you think?

my friends have d-link routers, and they're pretty good, cheap, and simple to set up.

Yup. However, most computers support 802.11b. SO I recommend you first check which one your computer has.

Theres almost never compatability problems, any card will work with any router.

Linksys or Dlink are good choices.

Now, If you get a linksys,write them a letter asking for the complete source code for it. The wireless linksys routers run Linux, but they aren't abiding by the GPL and releasing the source code, Alan Cox even wrote them a letter threatening, so ask for the source, legally, they have to give it to you, because they gave you a binary (the router).

yeah, lots of places have sales, like newegg. routers are like 40 bucks or something.

check out www.pricewatch.com and www.resellerratings.com to find good deals.

d-link has issues with lots of stuff...

lots of settings to set and firmwire updates to update.

it's config utility is pretty confusing cause they dont use standard terms.

but it'll be pretty good if you can get everything to work it with.

just remember this:

a = a

b = b,g

g = b,g

a only works with a(both cards and router), b and g cards are interoperable (i use

a 802g(linksys) card with a 802b router(smc barricade)). works flawlessy.

i use dlink in the office, its not a laptop but we have a wireless network for the people who do hav eone and it works brilliantlly....

I've gotten really good results so far with my Linksys WRT54G. It's the new wireless g from them. It works great. My dad's dell laptop has built in 802.11b and he's had no problems and gotten high speeds from across the house (about 35 feet away downstairs with a bunch of walls in between )

depends on what you are using it for...

surfing-the-net wise... it's ok.. i mean what can go wrong.. plug it in and you get internet..

file transfer wise... it's an ass to configure.

actually all routers have to be configured before working properly.. it's just that dlink ones are even harder to config. +they have issues with their firmware not working with some apps.

I've just ordered this router and a d-link ADSL modem. I'll post here to say how well it works because we have *really* thick walls in our house.

This doesn't really answer your question but dont get an SMC, i use routers a lot and set them up for other people at their houses and SMC routers seem to have so many problems. I agree with most people that Dlink and Netgear routers are pretty good but nothing beats 10/100 ethernet :own:

dlinks are great if they are setup right.

the only other router i have tried is linksys.

their stuff is more expensive as compared to dlink but the config is so much more user friendly.

I suggest looking through dsl-reports.com's forums... they have everything you want to know related to broadband.

I have a D-Link router and a seperate Wireless Acesspoint, we have 3 regular PC with wireless cards and one laptop hooked up to this. I must say I was amazed that it worked without having to mess with configurations. Just hooked everything up and it worked like a charm! I don't know what problems you speak of, I have never had any and about the GUI being unfriendly... uh? I found it easy as cherry-pie. I run a webserver, an ftpserver, irc and filesharing with no problems.

I've never had any trouble with D-Link. But I'm sure Linksys are just as good. We just went for what was cheapest and most bang-for-buck for us.

Netgear WGR614.....and design is also good. Work with PC and Mac.
