From The Far East... A Fonts Problem

Salutations dear reader,

I'm having fonts issues with my comp (Toshiba 1.7Ghz Mob P4, 512Mb Ram, Japanese XP Home Edition non SP1).

There are two problems:

1) Some of KoL's themes are killing the Japanese fonts in the start menu / programs list. The fonts disappear, leaving entirely blank rows where Japanese text normally appears.

2) Some of KoL's themes kill the Japanese fonts in the tabs, such as Display Properties / screensaver, appearance, effects, etc.

Running Iceman's themes the Japanese fonts are unmolested, except they get quite small in message boxes and a couple of other places. But I don't mind that. Iceman's VS turns water into wine as far as I'm concerned.

I would just like to have more choice, such as some of the latest Panther VS releases and some of the awesome Betas. But the fonts get all screwy and that's no good for my work.

Any ideas?

Try going to Display Properties > Appearance > Advanced ...

Click on the texts in the sample screen (Menu text, Program title, Icon text, etc) and change its font to an one that looks better in your system.

Good luck!

Thank you very much, Ken. Tabs can display all right now, but do you know how to adjust the fonts in the explorer / 'folders' view. you can see in the screenshot the left window only displays english, so some icons have NO text at all, such as 'my computer', 'my documents', etc.

Go to Advanced area in Display Properties again, and check every "Item" in the list. Check that every item that has a font, is set to the font of your preference, in case you missed something.

Good luck!

thank you, any other ideas?

yes, i thought so, too. i thought the disp prop / adv / icon controlled those fonts... but changing it has no effect. perhaps i have messed too much with the fonts ;) so i re-copied my backups into the original location but still no effect. anyway i will keep playing around, there is a solution somewhere.

thanks ken. :D

try getting StyleBuilder from http://www.tgtsoft.com/ and edit the visual style yourself, making sure that every single font is set correctly :)

#60025

okay, i will try in stylebuilder. can anyone give me a hint about where in the stylebuilder tree menu those fonts are located? the tree is pretty enormous, and it's my first time trying to mod a VS. check the screenshot above for what i'm talking about. THANKS.

Hey!

If you got LucidaGrande font.

You must try Fontlink.

you tried it?

1.Run TEXT editor.

2.Copy & Paste this description and save as *.reg.

----------------------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontLink\SystemLink]

;LucidaGrande and MS UI Gothic

"LucidaGrande"="MSGOTHIC.TTC,MS UI Gothic"

----------------------------------------

3.And click this file.

4.Your machine ReBoot.

hey fujita, what does that do?

#60132

Fujita's fix works well replacing Japanese XP system fonts (MS UI Gothic) with LucidaGrande (or etc.). But does not play well with Uxtheme / Style XP. After running the fix and rebooting, Style XP was unloaded every time at startup, but the new system fonts were there. So I ran Style XP to see if the new fonts would be preserved under authors' themes, but of course that didn't happen.

So Fujita's fix is excellent for users modding the interface independent of visual styles. Unfortunately I am not such an advanced user. I still rely on VS's for about 80% of my emu.

Anyway, Fujita appears to be a moderator at this Japanese skinning forum: http://www.xpskin.net/bb/ Click around and you can find links to Logon and Boot modding utilities, and some others.

Thanks Fujita-san :)

well, what I do is just go through every single item systematically. It sure takes a long time, but at least at the end of it you'll be sure that you've changed all of the fonts. ;) but maybe someone else has a better way..

> well, what I do is just go through every single item systematically...

hell, i did this with a few themes, including nearly flawless iceman's, and i got nowhere. have spent probably five or six hours straining my eyes in the stylebuilder tree menu--- saving, applying, checking the changes... now i have to stop, for the good of mankind. one thing is sure though, i have a LOT more appreciation for the kind of effort sknnnnrs go through to bring us their work. but still, i see the future...

backup ... ...

... ... ... ... ... reinstall

If you remove all skins from your system, is everything ok? In that case, you don't need to reinstall
