Mac, Just A Pretty Ui Or A Better System?

Now it's my turn

I must admit, I'm a Windows user through and through - I've had my fair share of experiences (and I don't mean short ones) with various other OSes (Unixes, Linuxes, Mac OSes, AmigaDOS & Workbench, Windows, BeOS, and countless other OSes for obscure systems like Z80s, Acorns, BBCs), but I still feel that Windows is the best OS for me. I like a lot of the Mac usability highlights, and there's a lot the MS could learn from Apple, but I think that this works both ways...

Personally, my main machine runs on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. I have a good reason, before people start ranting about using a server OS on a desktop machine - I develop web applications, and I'm evaluating IIS6, which, FYI, doesn't run in kernel space anymore

Maya runs on Linux, NATIVELY. Get over it. In fact, Pirates of the Carribean and a couple other films recently have been made completly in Linux using Maya.

StevieBM: It doesnt run in kernel space anymore? Thank god. How long did it take them to figure out it was stupid?

well then, here I am, back again and outa school, yeah! And I plan to ad my 2 cents to this discussion too.

I have experience in using MacOS from version 6.1 up to 10.2.3 and Windows from Windows 3.11 for Workgroups to XP Professional. I used all of them, really all of them, except Windows 98 Second Edition, I got ME instead...

however, as a short summary, I can say, I really adore the look of OS X, in general, doesn't matter if it is Panther, Puma, Aqua, it really doesnt matter, it just looks great. but, and here comes, what I think of the OS: I love my Windows installation. If you know what you do, you can have a very very stable windows, with no BSOD and no instabilities and stuff like that. anyway, a short story: Yesterday I had my first BSOD on my Compaq Evo notebook. you know why? I installed a radeon driver, which wasn't meant for the FireGL Mobility graphics card, and tried to play the HALO PC BETA, with this beta driver, and it resulted in a crash. voila, thats life, but with the original driver everything runs smooth and orgazmic

My school has got apple computers, and really alot of them. there are old iMacs, really old iMacs, there are G3 towers and new iMacs. you can find everything there, which is in someway mac-related. and there are still OS8 and 9 around on the iMacs, and 10.2.3 on the towers and new iMacs. I had one at home for testing purposes and after two months I gave it back to the school, and I decided to NOT buy a mac. I decided to look at them, trying to force their look onto my Windows, but I have Windows, I love Windows, and I think I will continue this way...

ah, by the way: the G3 towers actually have problems, they have graphics cards, which are not supported by the system, and you can't start iDVD, it stops with "No supported graphics card found". My point to "no unsupported hardware"...

That's one of the main points of the Mac OS: Somebody that's never seen a computer before in their life can use it and it's stable. You don't have to have years of expierience to get to "know what your doing".

And what iDVD was telling you was that that computer was too old to run it on! Mac OS itself supports the video card, it's just not up to spec for creating DVDs.

And another thing: You don't have to hunt for the clipboard in OS X!! I have to go through 4 levels of menus in the Start Menu to find the stupid clipboard!

someone here was saying they never have windows crapping on them and that there weren't any lock-ups or that random windows didn't start acting funny or something like that.

It usually happens when an application is not responding. Whatever you drag over its area leaves trails, as the area doesn't refresh. But in your screenshot it has a beautiful melting effect. How did you do it? (Y)

XFree86 does that, and Ive had OSX do it too (especially on compiling).

But on my new computer (2Ghz, 256MB of RAM), ONLY Windows "locks up" like that. Even XFree86 is responsive (thats a feat).

So yes, Windows is not stable.

osx definitely kicks the sh## out of windows. the only thing holding it back is: software support. most games arent developed for mac. i think the only reason halo is goin to mac is cause bungie used to be a mac developer. o wait, theres one more thing. the price of the hardware behind it. sure, those fancy 64-bit G5's may be nice, but take a gander at the price tag. damn i want one of those.

There are over 6500 apps available for the Mac.

and 500 of those are in the past 2 weeks.

yeah but im talkin gaming and stuff, their hardware is waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy more expensive for something of the same quality. however their high-end goes way beyond windows high end.

if i had enough money for a G5 i would ditch my pc in a second. but id also want the best graphics card, dvd burner, hard drive, apple cinema display, etc. i think of macs as the Porches of the computer world

edit: i dont think i really rebutted your statement. I'm certain that there are well over 6500 apps for PC, I would say at least 100k. That includes things that people do as hobbies. But another bonus for OSX, not so many viri.

This thread will continue until humans stop having feelings and opinions based on them, my guess... let the people hta tthink MacOS is better than windows think it is and viceversa...
