OK, need your advice.

i`m runing winXp Pro without sp1 or sp2

i`ve had lot`s of probles here... my pc is always re-booting and that king stuff (i tryed everything but noting at all) so the question is.

Shoud i install SP1 and SP2 ??

What do U think ?

do U think Sp1 and SP2 are better than no to have it ?

thanks a lot , i just want my winXp to be more stable :baby:

It will definately be more stable if you install SP1, but don't install SP2, it's not even out yet, don't get the leaked versions of it either. Get SP1 and you will be fine. :)

If it's always rebooting, you've probably got the MSblast virus. Use an online antivirus cleaner such as http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/.../start_corp.asp to check and clean your system before installing SP1. SP2 will automatically be installed later on as long as you have autoupdate on.

Gameboy i had that same problem and it wasnt the blaster worm or anything like that, it rebooted by itself without even waring every once in a while there was no patter that led top the reboots...

I installed a clen version of xp and then instlaled sp1 and voila... it works now...

Hope that helps...

you know when my pc get sicker ?? when i use the MSN . ....

but i have downloaded tons of antivirus and those things and nothing maybe it the same what u had. ....

hey, i have a laptop with no sp and it works beutifully. But if you can get SP1 get it. All most all hacks and system files are moving into SP1 and are leaving no sp behind. But yah, i thought i didn't have ms blast, and then i found it. A modified version. I suggest trying to get a virus scan if you don't have one and scan your comp, then install SP1.

hey, another question...

i know i can`t use a boot screen file if it was made to be used with a winXp sp1...... but can i use a boot screen file made to be used for a non sp1 winXp based pc... in a pc with sp1_?

If it keeps rebooting itself it sounds like one of two things:

1. You dont have a big enough power supply, or its faulty, random reboots are usually a sign of this.

2. Your CPU is overheating.

Either way, fix it quickly, both those things can cause serious damage to your computer.

Contrasutra & Seph also have valid reasons why your computer may be constantly rebooting. If you didn't install any new RAM, you might have RAM that overheated and went bad. Try replacing them and see if it solves the problem.

After updating to SP1a I got this weird bug.. It'd let me connect for under five minutes then tell me some vital thing had an error and that it will restart in one minute. It happened quicker when using an IM service or an email program. I ended up having to format and start over ( Thank god for partitions, or I would have had to download all my stuff again  ).

As other people have said, update to SP1 (or SP1a), not a leaked SP2. :)

#57958

What you just describes sounds like the BLASTER worm.

A TIP FOR EVERYONE WHO NEEDS TO UPDATE A SYSTEM AND IS AFRAID OF BLASTER:

Turn on the built in XP firewall before connecting to the internet, it stops blaster completly,

Why does no one do that?

Just want to say something here. I had the same problem, and formating didnt even work.. I tried win2k, winxp, and linux, but allways the same result. I felt that i had tried everything. My power-suply is 350, so it couldnt be that. And not the CPU either, because that didnt go over 40 degrees.. Then i started thinking about my HDD. It was a IBM-disk, and i had heared that their discs got som mistakes. I bought a new one, because i was sick of the problem. After that i have _never_ had that problem again.

#57961

yeah but my power siplie it brand new ... well maybe it is atleast 1 year old i`ve had older and nothing similar :(

my pc

Intel pentium IV 2.0a GHz

256 MB Ram

Video Card GeForce 64 Mb

Intel Original moderBoard

the case is a pentium IV one so it is big anough ....

hey do you think it could be my HD`s ???

maybe ... isn`t it ?

my HD`s --->

10 GB MAXTOR 5700 rpm

40 GB MAXTOR 7200 rpm

what have u head about those ????

something that you might want to try is in your control panel/ system properties/ advanced/ startup & recovery (i'm on win2000 right now, so if it's not exactly the same path to get to this in XP, look around in that general vicinity), there is a field that controls what happens when windows runs into a problem (see attached image). when it's unchecked, instead of rebooting, if it's a windows problem, it will give you a BSOD with an error message.

this happened to me after i had installed something corrupt, i just had to system restore back to an earlier date.

hope this helps!

Turning On The XP FireWall Will not help I had it on and I still got it. TRY DOWNLOADING BIGFIX TO WARN YOU about virus or bugs that your computer has and might get.

BigFix

I had the firewall on  and it was still happening. I installed the Blaster fix along with SP1a and I've had no problems..
