I have 3 CDs left and want to get off this windows sh##e. I am new to linux but i do have a book about it and have been doing some reading. I am basically pinned between:
Red Hat 9
or
Mandrake 9.1
I am going to dualboot with XP so im not totally abandoning MS.. 
anyway i really want to try this complete gnome OSX makeover too so im not sure which one supports it

Both support it, as both include Gnome as an option when you install it. I don't know which to recommend to you, but I'll go ahead and say Mandrake. They really are pretty much the same thing anyway in my opinion.
mandrake is great, but redhat is more versitile....and more ppl use it, which means more support....ie less compiling.
"Versitile"? Hardly. There is nothing better about Redhat, they just have good support.
Id go with Mandrake 9.2, its gonna be out a couple weeks.

it says rc2, which means release candidate 2. Or in other words, a beta. And having a beta version of an OS is maybe not the best idea.
I would also go for Mandrake, i have had best experiences with that distro 
Also, turn off all unneeded services.
Check the Mandrake Control Center.
Mandrake/Redhat LOVES to run every server they can at startup, not only is this insecure, but its REALLY slows down your machine.
Turn off Apache, Sendmail, portmap, ssh, etc, and your system will fly (as long as you arent using KDE/GNOME).
i have decided to use redhat, im TRYING to install an updated GAIM but it keeps asking for a dictionary library file

I'm actually in the process of finding a "New distro." Unfortuantely, red hat has pissed me off. The fancy "bluecurve" restrctions which are set on the main menu drive me insannnneee!
I've searched and searched and tried to find answers as to how to install gnome as STOCK gnome truly is. However, nobody has been able to help me.
On my test linux machine, I even stripped gnome away, and then did a fresh install using CVSGnome (automated download and compilation of gnome source files), and someone it STILL ended up using the stupid bluecurve/redhat version of gnome!

We'll see what happens. Debian is just slightly too complicated for me at the moment. I'm looking at Gentoo (I have used it extensively in the past, but I always had my linux-guru friend helping me and I've lost touch with him).
There is a way to make the menus editable again, but I don't know how offhand. If I find the link again, I'll edit this reply.

I've found the How To's and the links in other forums to make the menu editable. I'm just...in the mood for something else. I was pretty turned off that Red Hat made things so "difficult" to change. Honestly, considering Linux is in my opinion one of the most powerful and flexible OSs you can find, I fail to see why Red Hat wouldn't let you edit a *menu*. For cryin' out loud.
Gentoo is probably for me. I've used it before...it's poweful, fast, robust, and super super sweeeeet. (nothin' better than emerge if you ask me!)
And since everything is compiled from source...well... Yah.
