Should MacVision Be Free?

Clockwise posted this on his website:

http://www.petitiononline.com/mvision/petition.html

Someone wants MacVision to be released for free. What do you think? I don't think so, and its insulting to Jeff to ask.

30 years from now, I could see it being free, but a couple years? C'mon!

I'd love to know what Jeff thinks too.

would be nice if it was free..

also would be nice if it worked on XP.

If I could afford BUYING ObjectDesktop apps, I'd be pressing Stardock to update ObjectBar, cause it seems to be slow and lacks some features to fully emulate OS X Finder (which is our goal here, eh?), like, fast user switching, Unicode support etc..

Why would objectbar implement fast user switching?

I agree w/ contrasutra that it is insulting to "request" such a thing. Had the author volunteered the program to be free would be one thing. The request is offensive.

I think it's more offensive to start a PETITION.. it would have been nicer to simply request it.. a petition is like "Rallying the troops" against him...

Oy. Lemme explain:

The petition is actually a year old. Or more. It is sort of like an in-joke now, on my site. I just sort of dredge it up whenever Brad Wardell gets a mention on the site, and always with the lead-in "in a unrelated story..."

Since it is not really to be taken seriously (in-joke), I can hardly think it to be insulting.

Also, you will remeber a thread on this site from a year ago (or more) that said the exact same thing last time I posted that link.

That aside:

As I explained before, the petition is not about getting free stuff. I have purchased both the Object Desktop Suite and the Galactic Civilzations box version from Wardell, so I feel keen about having supported Wardell's and Bargmann's livelyhoods. And since MacVision will only run properly in Windows 98, it will hardly take away from ObjectBar sales. Heck... the free version of ObjectBar hurts objectbar sales more than a free version of MacVision would.

And look, here were are supporting Jeff's work FOUR YEARS ago:

http://www.emaculation.com/jeffint.shtml

So: given Stardock $120 dollars, pimped ObjectBar more than anyone else, supported Bargmann before most of you could read, etc. etc.

Call me nostalgic, but don't call me insulting (please).

Hi all,

Well no it's not insulting at all even if it was for real and not as (in-joke) as ClockWise had stated.

The only insulting thing is to think that objecting or making a petition is... as it's within our rights to do so and/or express our demands.

@ miSka: Stardock doesn't develop ObjectBar as if it was MacVision or any other sorts of Mac's menu system kinda of emulator.

Which is bad since i think the only meaningful use of ObjectBar is to go strictly into the Mac's menu direction, same thing went wrong with DesktopX as insted of being a simple lightweght Widgets application it did turn to be that bloated app of *BS*.

However DesktopX was there before of Konfabulator and DesktopX had a total different approach than a Widget sort of an app as it is based on Veronica's..... "Okay.. i forgot the name"

Anyway i voted Don't care since i don't use ObjectBar. "i gave it a shot before"

Woah, Jeff was 15 when he made MacVision?! I have a new found respect for him. He's nothing short of amazing.

I feel like I've wasted my life. :(

Look how much Jeff has done in such a short amount of time. I have a feeling that some of the most brilliant things we'll see in computers will come from Jeff and Stardock.
