Aqua-Soft ForumsSo, from time to time i hear about new skins for linux and mandrake and gnome and kde and docks and i have no idea what this all is. On front page of Aquasoft there is a new theme for Gnome i think. Is Gnome a type of linux like mandrake? or is it a program for a type of linux like mandrake. I am really curious to see how and with what to skin it with.
Linux And How To Skin It?
GNOME (GNU Network object model environment) is a Desktop Environment ( a Window manager and a set of tools, like a file manager) for UNIX systems.
So is KDE (K Desketop Environment).
In linux, every program has different ways to skin it, so its a big thing to show.
The "docks" you see are actually "displays" that are part of a program called "gDekslets" or a program called "Karamba". These are similar to Windows "Samurize".
There IS a standalone dock out there, KSmoothDock, but it pretty much sucks.
For a dock to work well in linux, it would have to be writtten using OpenGL (like Moby uses DX9), because there is no real transparency/alpha blending in XFree86.
And "Mandrake" is called a linux DISTRIBUTION. A set of free/open source programs packaged together with the LINUX kernel.

Gnome is a desktop environment for Linux as it is KDE, what that means is that provides an unified way to display applications, it does this by providing guidelines and APIs/Toolkits for the development of graphic applications.
Linux is Linux, distributions like Mandrake are just a package of Linux, they put their favorite applications in a nice way and then put it in a CD so you can install it.
Skinning varies, it depends on the Desktop environment you are using.
so i can use either gnome or either kde for mandrake? where can i download these desktop enviorments unless it comes with linux and for some reason i haven't noticed it yet.
they come with linux, you can select which desktop environment you log in to clicking in the Sessions icons of your login script (assuming you are in the Graphic display log in)
