Ports And Routing

So I want Bittorrent to be better, I have to "open" up ports or something, I know how to get into the control panel and stuff for my Linkysys Router (192.168.1.1). How do I open these ports?

I'm behind a firewall/NAT, can I use BitTorrent?

Yes, but you will get better performance if other peers can connect to you. By default, BitTorrent listens on port 6881, trying incrementially higher ports if it's unable to bind. It gives up after 6889 (the port range is configurable.) It's up to you to figure out how to poke a hole in your firewall/NAT.

Perhaps port triggering or forwarding?

That would be port forwarding. ;)

THanks, but I dont know what to forward it to or anything. :6

well, for a linksys,

1. goto the 192.168.1.1 site.

2. look for the Advanced Tab and click it

3. Now goto the Forwarding Tab

4. In the Ext. Port, input the range of the ports you wanna open, say for HL, you should have it 27015 - 27016 Protocol TCP

5. now put the right ip address (192.168.1.10?)

6. and if this is for a game server, make sure you give out your real ip to your friends. You can find that in the Setup section, the status tab, and "IP ADDRESS" in the WAN category

So for bittorrent it would be something like this?
