you could try Overlord Quickshot

Hoversnap !

A GEM !

You push the key you had chosen (mine is F11),

the cursor changes itself into a cross, you select the area of the screen,

and it immediately saves this as a graphic file - in the format you had chosen, in the directory you had chosen (I chose directly on the desktop).

It's as easy as this !

Get it there :

HoverSnap!

and, yes, I forgot to mention... it's freeware, and it's in English, French, etc.

Thanks, I've heard of HoverSnap, but does it have the ability to produce both the screenshot and a thumbnail, so I don't need to resize the picture with PS?

Hi everyone,

First of all thank you Sharpie for mentioning OverLord QuickShot, and Mandrake for making me give HoverSnap ! a second shot.

No, I won't quit on SnagIt... Still using it.

However after Sharpie & Mandrake's entries i might have to keep one of the two applications on my system.

Q: Why?

A: Because both of the programs did something... breathtaking sort of a speak, they did capture a snapshot for the desktop while a video player playing a movie at first hand, Something that's only possible via SnagIt and all the other freeware and shareware applications that i've tried after tuning off hardware acceleration. And yes PrintScrn too can't do it.

Please note that this is can be system relative and might differ from system to other.

I tried both of the apps for two minutes so if i'm wrong about anything please correct me.

My review:

OverLord QuickShot:

Programmer/Developer: Amateur yet Pro.

License: Freeware

The app have an amazing quite, simple and slick GUI, kind reminds me with the snapshot program's dialogue that came with Linux mandrake 7.1 which i loved.

It's perfect for day to day use of taking fullscreen snapshots of your desktop.

Features:

Hide the application while taking snapshots

Show cursor

Preview of your snapshot before save

Ability to hide secretive data "didn't try it"

Zooming

Supports saving files in PNG, JPEG "with control of quality", GIF and PNG

Custom size/resize

Saves to your selected dir

Systray icon.

Can and will capture your video while playing.

HoverSnap !:

Programmer/Developer: Pro

License: Freeware

The app's GUI is fine/good

Features: all that of QuickShot's minus show cursor and preview which are both important imo and there is no zoom, paranoia or control for jpeg quality "not a biggy", And exceeds QuickShot's with:

play sound when capture is done

FTP upload "didn't try it"

Active area "important"

Custom area "important"

Shortcut keys "important", not custom

Auto generate filenames "important"

QuickShot Vs. HoverSnap !

It's tie, however if you gonna choose only one to live with...

I would go with HoverSnap ! as the missing features that went to QS is less vital and important than it is the other way except for the show cursor which is a part from the desktop, plus i'm running coolmon "an overlayered stats" which QS couldn't snap it bit HS! did.

Any way both of the programs could be developed to cover their missing features if their developers wanted.

Hope that would help the uncertain minds, Oh and btw SnagIt is untouchable "as an advanced full featured program" by any other programs except maybe for the desktop video capture in real-time on XP.

Oh, bothe of them are standalone apps which is a great thing.

Just wanted to add that QS dev is on the developing track and might surpass HS! on the long run.

But for day to day only desktop snapping QS & HS! fair good.

Don't tell me you've red all that!

Btw press my WWW for some snaping action.

Hi

Here are neat and high quality sounds to go with your HoverSnap !

The RAR attach contains 8 wav files ripped from a very old Corbis Photography theme, The sounds are very relative to the matter of Snaping.

For use with HoverSnap !, just pick any sound you like and copy it to HS!'s dir and rename it to Done.wav

Sure you can use it with any other Snaping program if it is supported.

Bye.
