While I was out of the room, a computer of mine managed to turn itself off.
When I try pressing the power button, nothing happens. No flicker, no noise, no sound of life whatsoever.
Any ideas? Will my stuff be safe?

Sounds like your PSU has gone pear-shaped. I'd hazard a guess your stuff should be intact, try sticking the drive in another PC as a slave just to be on the safe side and see what you get.
I've had a few power cuts, and the drives seem to be ok when the PC came back up.
If it comes back up, you can check how it looks using Driver Manager which runs as a stand-alone
Good luck
Nevermind, got it back up. It appears the I/O switch in the back was turned off... which doesn't tell me much, but at least everything is alright.
