So I saw the G5s yesterday.

I was pretty sceptical about whether they were silent (because of the 9 fans), but it WAS completly silent.

I am REALLY impressed by that.

And to dispel something: We all got pretty pissed when Apple showed the Messy PC and and the G5 that was empty and saying that the G5 is neater.

Well, Apple wasnt misleading you (as much), that G5 was a COMPLETE working system including 2 Ram sticks, harddrive, 2 procs, video card, and all the integrated stuff.

I got to see the inside and the thing is REALLY neat. They did a nice job.

yea, i saw the G5 last week and it was not what i expected, which was good. Forget all the images you see on their site because seeing it first hand looks MUCH better. I was expecting to see a REALLY tall case, but in reality, it was the size of a mid-tower and look VERY smooth & clean. Plus if you ever want to mess with it inside, its very clean and easy to work with, not much wires, if any, to dodge to add/remove a component.

the G5 i saw was running jaguar, and i must say, it was VERY smooth and fast. From watching movie clips, to fiddling with the dock and its bounce animations, and messing around in photoshop, it's what the Apple people said it is. What is IT? Go check out a G5 and you'll know what I'm talkin about.

no matter how good the G5 is my complaint would be that it is still expensive. Now there might be reasons for this but I honestly would buy a G5 in an instant if it was around $1600. But this is not the case, so as far as I am concerned I'll only be able to look at a G5.

show me a comparable PC for less.

Opterons? More expensive.

Xeons. Waayy more expensive.

Go to Dell.com or whatever and build a similarly equipped PC and compare the price with that of a G5.

Honestly, you wont notice the speed, and how many people need 8GB of RAM?

Also, PCI-X isnt used anywhere, because it sucks (its being replaces by PCI-Express).

That was just Dell, whose prices in the high end arent great, so if I shopped around, I could find something cheaper.

And im not going to argue P4 vs. G5, but the P4 3.2Ghz is hardly underpowered.

W/O the internet and the video card, it would be $350 cheaper, at least. But even now, its $400 less.

or even better go to http://www.unitedmicro.com and use the configurator, the prices there are pretty cheap since they are wholesalers, i got my pc from them and so far so good. it doesn't come with manuals or anything like that basically what u ask and pay for is what u get.

if anyone knows about any other site with better prices please let me know I'd be very much interested in checking it out

First off, anything with a brushed metal fascia screams of Hi-Fi equipment from the eighties. Ick city :6 (I am sure Apple will return to form with the next generation of whatsoever they generate). But... the G5 is so quintessentially appleicious ! I mean, if you're a techno freak, it's hard not to be a tad extremely bonkers in love with it when you see inside it. It's like peeking into an ant hill for the first time and the ants are wearing Armani! I build systems, near silent ones, and can deliver pretty, very tidy computers but... Yes, I appreciate that the G5's price is an ouch and, yes, the specification is a sitting duck waiting to be turned into braised quack but... isn't that missing the point of Apple as an entity? Apple specialize in delivering ready to roll WOW right out of the box; no phaffing around, no need to skin the operating system. Instant productivity tool. I mean, think how much time-is-money time we have spent modding our XPs, which when our friends see them they then... go out and buy Apples! :order:

That said, to all the detractors who feel we could have been spending our time more productively, it is worth noting that, thanks to the hard work of those on these communities, we now know a heck of a lot about the workings of XP, etc. Acquired knowledge sits well on a Resume.

Now, if someone would just come out with replacement cases (or replacement sides) for the G5, made out of 'glass' so that you can see those yummy innards.... :woot:

PC configurations would blow up ANY mac out of the water... anytime!

But owning and using a Mac is an experience that is yet to be matched by a PC manufacturer and I think that's the issue here. Sure one may have a kickass PC but I'm sure deep down inside there's still a yearning for a Mac, right?

I can't explain it but using OS X is an incredible feeling (we have OS X at work). I don't get that feeling whenever I'm at home using my WinXP.

Like I said in my other thread, I'm gonna switch fully by the end of the month. I'm still waiting for what Apple has to offer after next Tuesday's announcements in Paris.

Yeah, I know an MS Bash. Not that Windows is "bad" per se, but its boring. Even with all of our tweaks, its a very static desktop.

Perspective. Dock and wallpaper aside... is OS X as easy to skin as XP? I gather not and that there are some stability problems? Half of the fun of owning a computer is the ability to costomise it, to make it do what you want. In which case, as compared to our Apple friends, XP users who skin and who system build have more fun and learn their way around the operating system! The more you know, the more productive a use you are able to put your PC tool to.

* I think the best thing to do, right now, without delay, is to lobby MS to get Longhorn right - easier to skin across the board and a supplied choice of multiple different skins, like KDE and Gnome have for Linux (I dual boot between XP and Red Hat Linux with its clean Bellcurve style).

Even after skinning, XP still physically looks like XP, a reliable but, arguably, uninspiring workhorse. Do I want an Apple, myself? Who cares! What I want to ask is, does the latest option of Virtual PC for OS X run all Windows applications and hardware without limitations? If I can run Windows, OS X and Linux apps from the same box, without limitations (and if Apple would, you know, lower their prices and make their comps more uprageable...) an Apple then starts to become appealing. But I still say the dull looking G5 wants high quality transparent sides to show off the insides! At the moment there are too many 'ifs'; respect to all Apple owners but at the moment I'm sticking to my PCs.
