Iphone Question!

So after many searching and thinking I decided that the most logic option was to ask directly here.

Here's the deal, I'm going to Los Angeles this September and I want to buy an iPhone 3G or 3GS, but I want to know if I have to pay for the AT&T contract or other stuff other than the phone ($99 or $199 respectively) because I only want the phone, I'm going to use it here in Mexico.

I was also wondering about the blocking, will I be able to use the phone and text messaging normally? or are they still selling them region-blocked?

Please any answers and any other information I must know will be invaluable as I don't want to waste my money on something I won't be able to use.

i was thinking about getting a 3GS but then i saw it costs 200 for the phone (which is fine) plus 70 a month minimum, for 2 years. better ways to spend a G for me right now.

You can buy the phone without the AT&T contract but not at that price. The $99 and $199 become $299 and $499...............

No, the $199 and $299, if you buy contract free, becomes $599 and $699.

Sorry to bring back this topic, but it seems that I'll get a 3GS for Christmas, but I was wondering, do I need to jailbreak it in order to unblock it and use it with my local operator? I really don't want to jailbreak.

Also, if I do need to jailbreak it, can I un-jailbreak it after I unblock it?
