[debate]mac Complaints

I finally got to play with the G5 today. I think it was the 1.8Ghz model.

Well, I love it of course, its super fast, but one thing is still not fixed:

WINDOW RESIZING! Why must a G5 resize windows worse than my P1-166?

Its obviously a software issue, since it does it on the G4-G5.

Question: For those who have tried Panther; Does the problem still exist?!

Which brings me to the thread title: What do you want to see fixed/changed on Macs/OSX?

We all know the advantages of macs, but what are some complaints.

PS. This isn't a flame thread, I just thought we havent discussed this much.

I'm referring only to Jaguar here, I've not tried Panther, and I won't until it's gone final. These comments relate to my iBook 900MHZ with 640MB RAM.

• Dragging a window scrollbar is slow. It normally follows about half a second later than my cursor.

• Preview as an image viewing application is severely lacking. If I want to view an image to fit my screen, I have to press Cmd-Shift-=, and then press the Zoom button on the window. This is not fast, nor intuitive. I started a thread in the Mac section relating to this some time ago - take a peek there with my further Preview grievances. Before any of you say iPhoto as a solution, it's very slow.

• iTunes 4.0.1 takes up one hell of a lot of resources. It rules, but it's very slow.

• I'd like to see the Apple in the corner mimic the old style Apple Menu where you could easily choose your apps. For those I use most frequently, obviously that's what the dock is for. It would be nice though to enter the Apple menu, choose Apps, then choose the one I wanted. A bit like the Start Menu in fact.

• Jaguar is simply slow. Not in performance, but in 'feel'. Those accustomed to it will know what I mean. It's slick, but not as smooth as it could be. It amazes me that on an OS with features such as the Genie effect, transparent titlebars, and all the other stuff, that something as basic as instant window scrollbar movement can't be mastered. Apple are masters of style, let's hope that 10.3 finally achieves a status of substance taking the front seat over style.

mike pretty much sums up the points. :)

However I have one thing to add:

I think the 'About This Mac' item in the Apple Menu is plain stupid. Who honestly forgets everyday and checks what mac he has and how much RAM is installed?

edit: and hopefully the window-resizing and scrolling problems should be fixed, coz I heard there's a new version of Quartz Extreme.

#53647

actually we use the about my mac all the time in IT. Its a quick and easy way to get information about the computer. It shows more than ram, try clicking on that information ;).

Its the same thing on windows too... properties of my computer give you the same info.

Ahaks

I thought mac was perfect and only window have those problems....

#53937

u taught wrong, windows sucks less now. hehehehehehe.

mac sucks more now, really.

now i switch between jaguar, panther and 2k3.

hating all three at the same time. noticed that macs seem to be crashing a lot nowadays.

Oh please... Get a life. I own a 400mhz indigo iMac DV w/128MB memory running Jaguar and it's crashed 2 times the entire year. Not bad, considering I do high-resolution, high memory work on it every day.

Have you ever thought that maybe someone has (shock) different experiences from yours?

Also, how long do you leave it on for?

XP never use to crash on me, but when I started to leave it on all the time, it got flaky.

And 2 times is a lot for a modern OS. :P (dont bring up my kernel panic).

I leave my iMac up for 6 - 7 days at a time, and even then the only reason I reboot is because I installed something.

And, I'd like you to know that when I say hi-res, I mean HI-RES. We're talking like 1500x2000 type of thing - and only on 400mhz with 128MB RAM. I think that's pretty darn good.

Can your 8,000Ghz PC w/ 80TB of memory and XPee do that? :6 :D

And you'd better watch when I have Panther, 'cuz then I'll leave it up for MONTHS at a time! :own:

here we go again, who cares how long your mac or pc stays on..

i use windows 2k3 on a 700mhz thinkpad, jaguar on a 400mhz dv imac and

a 450mhz b/w g3, leaving them on for days is just a drain on my finances.

and the more i use them the more i find stuff i hate with both os's.

well had my chance to play with a G5(1.6ghz) today running 10.2.7, the os

looks clean and it was pretty darn fast. but i have to say i'm not a big fan of the case design.

so what really is 10.2.7?

also noticed that the agp speed 4x, now has anyone here done real world testing with a 8x agp card? would like to know the difference b/ween the two.

and if you want a modern os that runs for years without rebooting, get yourself

a freebsd machine.

don't need no computer neophytes in here bugging me.

For me Windows can get bent... My School district uses Mac extensivly, eMacs and iMacs.

Widnows 2000 on my schools network is slugish and always gives you the feeling its going to crash..

Os 9 and OS X: Best OSs in the world, THEY have never crashed for me ever...

OS 6.0.*: Damn fast, never networked it but, damn... 30 second boot!

RedHat Linux: WE NEED LINUX TOO... LINUX IS THE sh##!! you can do more things in Linux than in Windows.

@contra: I know what you mean by the Window resizing... missed shadow frames, slow... C'mon Apple!

@royalpain: If you hat both OSs, why are you here?

#54242

well, I played around with a 1.6/256 G5, and strangely there was no resizing problem.

But I do agree, with all other macs, the annoying problem DOES exist - there's no denying that.

Also, another gripe is that tables in Dreamweaver and Word are very slow. That is another area that could be improved.

#54276

  'cos i got no where left to go.

On the G5, the resizing problem was only with Brushed apps like iTunes, iMovie, etc. Is that "Cocoa"?

Cocoa apps have those customizable toolbars, right?

I don't know why Apple has two APIs in the first place, its just confusing for neophytes like me. Maybe one is older. :shy:

There are two API's due to the underlying system darwin. When apple absorbed NextStep into what would become Os X, they inherited the programming language limits. The original plan was to chuck all the legacy code completely and force 3rd party developers to re-write all thier software. As you can imagine that didn't go well with large corps like Adobe, M$ and Macromedia.

So to sate these developers carbon was created. It allows applications to make calls to the legacy API's in 9. This allowed for quick modding of existing code, while giving the big boys time to port thier code entirely to Cocoa. If plans are still on track, Carbon will be phased out of X by 10.5/.6.

thanks for the info Jesuit,

and welcome to aqua-soft :)

i also read somewhere that cocoa apps could be used on x86 systems, so apple can quickly compile in a day an x86 version of os x. wish i had it....

#59250

Yeah, there is GNUSTEP too, an Open Source version of the NeXT framework.

Thats what WindowMaker is a part of, so maybe you notice the similarities.

#59263

I admit, I've only used OS 8.1 at the moment.. But I've never had a problem with it. Not so much as a program playing up, although IE does slow down after a while.. (Oh and great info jesuit :))

What a waste of electricity!!! I've seen my fair share of mac's smoke, melt, or fiz at the university because people forget to turn them off in the labs and close the doors... G4 Cube = hotplate :smartass:

Ahh, yes - the beautiful cube. That's the reason they discontinued them - heat trouble. ;)

My iMac is much better cooled. It's fanless system works quite well.

BTW, I have my sights set on a 17" 1.25 Ghz iMac. One sweet machine :D

#63080

Actually, Carbon is faster than Cocoa. It is a common myth that it is slower, but it isn't

'Brushed' Carbon apps need to create their own graphic resources, because the theme file apple made doesn't share the brushed resources with carbon apps. That is why carbon can seem slower. It needs an exclusive set of graphics.
