[help] Major Visual Glitch...winxp Luna...

I have had a major visual glitch in the upper (rt) hand corner of any active titlebar, where there is a gap showing to the right of Min, Max, Close buttons...At first I thought that it was because I was using msstyles, I have the excellent works from KoL, Iceman, b0se, ect. and am completely enamored with the mac emulation VS, ect...

Here is a link to the gap, which happens when the window is maxed, it looks fine, but when I opened another window it (always) shows up with this 'gap'...thanks to Lynchknot, we did the chat via Messenger and exchanged pics...so he knows that this is very strange...

Also this 'gap' happens with WinXP (Luna) style...when the maximized, 'gap' window is minimized to the taskbar, and then maximized, it does not show this very annoying 'gap', however when closing the window, and opening it again, the maximized window has it again...All baby windows opened from a maximized, 'gap' window, have it too!!

If anyone can please assist, maybe my laptop is going kaput??

EDIT---It does not happen with Classic style...just installed it and opened up many, many windows...Also it happened after my 3rd reformat (clean install) before SP1 was even installed...It happens in WinXP Style (Luna), Firebird, IE6, and most Window Explorer windows, but does not occur when WinXP Classic style is applied, or when using my MSN 8.5 Explorer browser! I have carefully check my retail WinXP CD, and found no scratches, ect., and even washed it with a CD cleaning solution...

I really hate to *bump* one of my threads, but I will only do this one time in hopes that maybe one of our talented themers, or even a new member (with Windows resizing knowledge) will be able to help me with this very annoying visual glitch...

It is basically ruining my VS's with this dam 'gap' and I have even sent in my laptop for a complete diagnostic testing session for LCD, Mobo, ect., ect., and of course it came back with "No Hardware Problems" detected...

The only alternative is shellWM, but unfortunately this very promising but still very buggy app, (even though Floyd25 @sourceforge/shellWM site is doing his best to recode everything) plays nasty games with some of of my apps...

how old is your laptop

check the graphics settings for 32bit color, and make sure that you have an updated graphics driver if avail.

The WinXP Hardware Wizard does not pick up any more updated driver then this dated one...I have done research and have colleagues @VIA Forums...it seems VIA has bought out Trident...and I have checked with VIA Graphics Drivers that might work with my Trident driver to at least try to get it updated...but unfortunately no success...

Being a Compaq Presario laptop, I have also searched the Compaq/HP site (nightmare) for any updated Graphics Drivers for my model...but their Soft Paq section is very poor and not very updated...

All settings (graphics) for 32bit have been checked and there are 'no conflicts' showing in resources...

Gap is still there...

You know I even sent in my laptop for a complete diagnostic check up and unfortunately it came back with no issues with my mobo or LCD...

Right now I'm using the new CompositeX VS from elpincho & Iceman, and with the Black Ice style the title/caption bar (of course) still has this dam gap but it is black and kinda matches the Black Ice coloured title/caption bar..

But you have 'hit it right on the nail' for this is exactly what it is doing...once in a rare instance the window will maximize/resize properly where the close button will fully close this dam 'gap'...But it should do this every time...

Any other tips??

I would back up all my theme files, and Icemans (or other's) systemfiles. Then run SFC /SCANNOW from the run box, with your XP cd in the tray.

This will run through your entire windows folder and check the files replacing all files that it doesnt recognize or that are missing, therefore also your aquafications, (UXtheme.dll, and all other system files (shell32.dll, etc)

Let it run through, it will take a long time,... and when finished, reboot, and aquafy again.

This is the best method in my view, short of a format, which would be better.

Yes, your method was suggested before, and unfortunately, after completing it, this 'gap' still appears...so I chose to do a clean install (reformat) and this dam gap still appears with the WinXP MS display driver that it installs from the retail WinXP (Home) CD....As I mentioned above, it appears with WinXP (Luna) msstyle even before SP1 is applied, but not with Classic msstyle...

What I did was to let Hardware Wizard update the following driver, that was installed by WinXP CD:

Driver: Microsoft

Date: 6/6/2001

Ver: 5.1.2001.0

TO:

Driver: Trident Video Accelerator CyberBladei1 AGP 6.1019.51

Date: 10/19/2001

Ver: 5.1.2527.133

This is still a dated driver and 'yes' this dam 'gap' still appears...Going to the Trident Website is no help for with a laptop, (of course) they push the buck to 'check with your OEM-Compaq...The Compaq/HP site is a nightmare to navigate, and trying to find a more updated Display Driver for my model: 12XL300a, the search does not produce any SoftPaqs (Compaq drivers) for WinXP at all... This laptop originally came with WinME preinstalled and I have totally got rid of any traces of ME...

So after reseaching like a 'madman' my colleagues @VIA, informed me that Trident has since been bought by VIA, and you might have success with trying one of the more updated VIA Integrated Display Controller Drivers...So I D/L the following driver from the VIA Driver Site:

KPLE Win2KXP 3137 Graphics/Display Driver Package (5.5MB+), but when attempting to install it, the installer comes up with 'Can't complete installation, please check the s3.setup.log, where it states:"Cannot find the compatiable driver device for VEN_1023 & DEV 8520 in the KPLE Win2KXP_3137\Setup\KPLE2KXP .inf" Now in the tables for these drivers, my chipset: PLE 133 with VT 8601-Northbridge & VT 826686A/B-Southbride matches what is required for successful installation...

So I then tried to manually update the driver through Hardware Wiazard and was able to force the driver to be installed...Choose "Let me pick/choose driver to be install" method, and of course got the 'MS Driver Not signed warning'...which VIA warned you would get, but keep checking proceed'...so after pointing the out-dated Trident driver to the KPLE2KXP.inf file this is what it updated to:

Driver: VIA Tech VT8361/VT8601 Graphics Controller

Date: 9/24/2002

Ver: 6.13.10.3137

Now on the VIA Graphics Driver site: Note: These drivers do not have MS Logo (signed certification) and users will be shown an Warning' but VIA has tested these drivers extensively in their labs, and found that the updated drivers can help systems with some what 'dated' graphics drivers..

So I rebooted and immediately opened a explorer window and (in pleasent shock) there was not a 'gap'...I was thrilled...I then opened a IE 6 window and a Firebird 0.7 window and no 'gaps" at all...I thought that I had finally found a solution...

However after rebooting again, and going into Device Manager---Display Device, I see a yellow exclaimation mark...Device Problem: Code 10...Device will not start...

So I then checked the DirectX Diagnostic tool and 'dam it' when going to Display..."You have a generic driver that is not starting, and the following:

Direct Draw Acceleration: Not Enabled

Direct 3D Acceration: Not Enabled

AGP Texture Acceleration: Not Enabled

So I had no other chioce but to 'uninstall' the device and reboot and now I am right where I was before this adventure started...now have:

Trident Cyberblade i1 AGP 6.1019.51

Driver: Trident

Date: 10/19/2001

Ver: 5.1.2527.133

And still have the dam 'gap'...

lol...I am glad there is someone else who expereincing my true torture with this issue...

No, unfortunately when using the default MS graphics driver, I still get this gap...when letting Hardware Wizard update (by 4 months) the driver to the present Trident driver mentioned above...the 'gap' is staring me right in my face!!!

I do not play any games with this laptop...

m8, there must be a solution to this issue...lol..for I'm also going to copy & paste this whole thread and post it on the VIA forums...however my hopes for a successful solution are fading...

If you come up with a solution...please let me know, and vice-versa...

I am thrilled to report that my dam 'gap' issues have finally been rectified, by the assistance of one of our treasured members, ThreeDrives!!!

After searching in vain for a more updated graphics driver, with no success especially with poor support from my OEM...I was completely perplexed with this dam 'gap' staring at me every day...

Three Drives suggested today to try going to Display Properties--->Advanced--->Hardware Acceleration (which I had set all the way to the right-maximized) dropping it down one notch then applying and see what happens...

YES...it worked...now openng up any explorer window, IE6, or my beloved Firebird 0.7, there are no gaps, and I can once again enjoy the wonderful VS's that our talented themers create for our delight and enjoyment...

Bottom line. is that I will never again purchase a computer component, that is of poor quality...as the old saying goes..."You get what you payed for" always stands with time as correct...
