Ntfs Patition

For the first time i formated my PC with NTFS partition, since i bought a new HD and my XP CD only allow me to format in NTFS (i still can format in fat32 using some old cd´s, but i´ve tryed it anyway).

There are anyway to boot with a disk or a CD and still read the NTFS hd?! So i can change my system files from outside the windows (just like i do with my old Fat32 partition)?.

There are any drawbacks in changing system files on ntfs?! Better protection or something like t=hat?! I´m asking because after changing my system files (on SecurityMode) i´m always getting the warning from windows to put my Windows CD to recover system files.

I want to use NTFS on my new HD... with help and hints can you give me... plese!

Hi..

As you've discovered, reading NTFS from FAT32 is no party game. However, it can be done.

There are a couple of options that you may want to look at:

3. http://www.bootdisk.com/ (Loads of helpful tools.)

NTFS is far better than FAT32 in many ways but it isn't as pliable as FAT32 when it comes to tolerating other Operating Systems.

Though given the choice, I'd go NTFS every time, for the security aspects alone, if not the other benefits.

As you've also discovered, XP is a tad more rigid in protecting its system files. It keeps copies of them all, (usually in the \Windows\ServicePackFiles and the \Windows\System32\dllcache folders) and if it detects a change (usually in the System32 folder) then it will prompt you to restore the original. A real pain in the butt if you ask me but good for those who need it I suppose.

But... this protection its a WinXP feature or a NTFS feature... because i´ve always changed it in XP and everything wents fine... i´d only gets those messages after partitioning it on NTFS.

BTW... anyone knows about any conflict between 3dMax5 and NTFS partitions?!

As far as I know, its Xp's feature. The protection system works in all the cases, whether you use NTFS or FAT32. Im currently using both NTFS and FAT32 on 2 comps and get the warning msg on both comp.
