Illegal 2 Modify?

Ok guys I got a question here. I believe its not a crime if you modify an app - lets say "Norton Antivirus" and change all icons, bitmaps, sounds etc.

But isn't illegal to distribute it to others? Won't I get prosecuted soon or later?

Another thing is that sometimes when distributing som files, they can be considered as a "crack", because many programs have their trial check in the

main EXE. And if I distribute a modified EXE from a buyed registrered legal app, I'll let other people use this as a crack (if there is no better cracj out there).

Well I don't care if other people use it as a crack, I just don't wanna have heat :staffs here:

on me for modifiaction (copyright) or for distributing a crack.

The reason why I ask this is because I made a mod for XPlay (Software for Apple's iPod on windows - much better than musicmatch).

Anyway, there's guy (great one :rule: ), no names, y'all know who it is.. Is hosting

modified program files. So I thougt maybe I could too, and maybe is not illlegal..

See you..

Go ahead dude.... so just don`t say name ... and everythings gonna be ok.....

i havent tried xPlay but i use ephPod2... cause it's free. ;)

modifying any "system" files is illegal in two ways.

1. DMCA - Digital Millenium Copyright act, any reverse engineering or copy protection breaking is illegal.

2. In the EULA, MS says you cant, and thats a contract.

And distributing them is MUCH more illegal, as those files are their IP.

This is classic piracy. You should know not to do that.

Technically, just using XPlay is illegal.

 if you would just enlighten me.

You're using a non-apple approved method of accessing the iPod.

Depending on Apples license, this is probobly not allowed.

Along with that, XPlay had to do some copyright breaking, so its illegal, and any user of it is breaking the law.

r u kidding me? god, our government as too many laws (note to mods, this is not a political post). why should apple have a monopoly on how you use what you BOUGHT??!!

Folks, please keep in mind taht just because a company tells you that you may not do something specific (in the EULA, for example) it doesnt mean that this contract actually holds true. Certain passages can sometimes be ignored because they actually violate laws.

So, if a company tells you that you may not reverse engineer their work then this may simply be wrong on their side to do since you might be allowed to do anything with what you have purchased for private use. It might be different if you try to do something for business reasons, though.

So just because the EULA says something doesnt mean its valid. using third-party apps is nothing Apple CAN prohibit. Its a nice try, not more.

Same goes for reshacking at home. Do it, have fun. You might be ot allowed to distribute your work, especially if you effectively are distributing a file to circumvent copy protection.

If you want to distribute your mod, you might be better off with Restorator and distribute your Respatchers.

You might as well try to distribute an eXeScope script.

Have fun,

xPlay and ephPod are not illegal. Apple does not recomend using third party apps but I believe that there is no law against it.

#53205

But distributing a full version .exe is considered warez

i'm sure many of us know how to reshack an app.

if you did anything more than just reshack it like hex editing...

then make a tutorial..

tell people using xplay what to reshack and give them the icons/bitmaps...

#53209

how are you "moding" the XPlay file?

(what program are you using)

if all you are doing is graphic editing, it wouldn't be that difficult to make a patch.

if you wanted to send me the original file, and the one you modded, i could send you back a patch..

Hey.. that is great. It was just the thing I was looking for. So if i do this

I won't be labeled "crack distirbuter" ;). Thanx I will do this for my mods.

Well yeah, i thought that was the alterative way to not to distribute the Exe's. But now

with Restorator & eXeScope all I need is to distribute the patch (resources and the script).

Im changing the Icons/Bitmaps of the Xplay shell for explorer, the dialogs, the

main icons.. etc. No big deal.
