System Fonts
The System fonts are generally inbuilt with the operating systems and they cannot be changed. New fonts can be added as and when required. Too many fonts may take a load of memory
or,
via registry hack (back-up first)
On XP,
-go to Registry Editor...
-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>MICROSOFT>Windows NT>Current Version>FontSubstitutes
-change the values (font names) of MS Shell Dlg and MS Shell Dlg 2 and restart.
Be ready to reap the consequences, specially if you use a font with wider dimensions (e.g Tahoma vs. Verdana). Some dialog boxes and 3rd party app boxes will be messed up.

Must the system be restarted after regedit trick?
I changed MS Shell Dlg font substitute from MS Sans Serif to Tahoma 
yes, or log out at least i think
