Avedesk alternative (still need Mac style icons for xp)

I quess all there will agree with me that windows desktop icons (especially in WinXp) are crap and need to be replaced if we are speaking about beauty on desktop.

So, Mac icons were ported to Windows and make such goodness available:

All of you knows that app that can make it is Avedesk. But unfortunately, it is really buggy. My knowledge is good, im not a newb and i wasted 4 days playing around with it, so please no "ahh its running n1 for me so go away noob". I tryed 1.3, 1.4, 2.0b on my XPSp3 and all of it crashed sometimes @ logon/logoff (mb 1 time of 5, mb often) even with only desktop icons module enabled (PIDShortcut) and no Avescript. So i need an alternative which can do that and be stable.

Some googleing made me found only "IKon" for Y'Widgets but its unable even to show folder's size.

I used Samurize for some month and i can bet for sure that it isn't suits for such purpose.

Well, I have no clue what you were doing with Samurize, because it can do what Avedesk can do, but a whole lot more. Plus, it's very stable and easier to make custom things with it.

The only other real answer besides Avedesk is Samurize.

Yeah, in theory it can be done, but it requires a lot of hardwork for just adding an icon. Thats a hard way for me and its better for huge configs. Thats why i told that Samurize isn't a way for me.

So maybe i just missed some widgets/plugins for example for DesktopX, and so it can be done easyer without 999 hours of doing it.

Check inputimage.dll, then add a meter to the image. It's that easy. Then to get info, you just use the diskspace.dll plugin. You're not going to get anywhere near the level of Avedesk or Samurize with Desktop X.

The disk space plugin should be there by default, and inputimage.dll is in the plugin pack.

In samurize (its up @ picture) i can't get good looking shadow (as in AveDesk or Ikonic) under the text, only flat shadow. Thats why i uninstalled it before.

Mb i missed any plugin for doing it?

You're not going to get anywhere near the level of Avedesk or Samurize with Desktop X.

I'd have to disagree on this. You can do a lot with DesktopX. Actually you can do the same with pretty much all of them.

The two outstanding features of Samurize are the toolbar and better access to the Windows API, that and it's free.

It's been awhile since I compared all three but, AveDesk was hands down the best for desktop icons when I last checked.

Yeah, Avedesk was da best and if not its instability i would never ask.

For DesktopX unfortunately i didn't found Avedesk-like plugin and ppl on Stardock's official forum don't know anything about it

Ikonic for Yahoo isn't works properly for me. I contacted his author but has not received the answer yet.

So, my search is still in progress..

I haven't used Desktop X in a while, so I wouldn't really know about many new features. What stability issues are you having with Avedesk though? It seemed to work perfect for me, with little crashing that was mostly my fault.

My experience has been the same as evilmnky's with AveDesk.

DesktopX has no plugin and doesn't need one for that. Just a simple script including a timer. The best place to post for DesktopX help over there is buried DesktopX Forum

What stability issues are you having with Avedesk though? It seemed to work perfect for me, with little crashing that was mostly my fault.

I use only Shortcuts (PIDShortcuts) for few folders and "my computer" without any additional features only for my 1-st display. My OS is XpSp3 En - genuine and absolutely clear. In 1 of 3 times when im logging on, its crashes (no PIDschortcuts appears or appears 1/2 of them) and further i unable to access to my desktop (its freezes till i kill Avedesk through taskmanager). Sometimes it can crash when im trying to apply new theme or when im logging of.

I tryed 1.3 few times, and 2.0, played with different combinations and remade my desklets assembly. I deleted language dir as it was adviced. I restored my system to the latest backup state, etc. I dunno what can i do more.
