600 Mhz Ibook Performance?

First off, thank you all for your great discussions. I have always been interested in Macs, just never thought I'd want one.

What I was wondering is how is Jaguar performance with an ibook 600mhz? I ask this because I cannot afford a new ibook or PB and have seen a number of ibooks with extra software and peripherals for aroun $650 on eBay. That would probably work out great for me (someday) as I'd really love another notebook. I had a PC notebook, but it died.

I just wanted to get an overall feel for day to day performance. I'm not going to use this for image/video editing. More for Internet, e-mail, itoons and if it has a DVD player, movies on the road.

Also, I know quartz extreme is really only supported with vid cards with at least 16 mb ram. I don't think these 600 mhz notebooks have that power. What would I be missing? I really love all the neat extras of OSX (genie, dock) and want reasonably smooth performance if possible.

Sorry if I am asking too much, I really would love an ibook and this might be my only way. Please add anything you would like about experience whether good or bad.

Thank you so much! :D

well i have a 300mhz ibook lol and i can use docks and genie effect :) its all basically the os since mac os x can run on low end computers your pretty much set it will only really lack when you have a lot of windows open and such

it won't be great.

But wait for Panther. It will be FAST!

I have read replies from people running it on 400-500MHz iBooks and iMacs and have been very impressed by the results. Expect it to fly. :)

Quartz Extreme is just a way to allow even better Hardware acceleration. Quartz is the actual compositing engine.

So basically, you will be able to use 99% of the effects on the iBook, they just won't be as accelerated as they could.

I believe that the first effect to require QE is that fast user switching animation in Panther.

Sorry about posting in the wrong group, I didn't see that there was a mac hardware specific forum.

I have a 700Mhz iBook with 382MB of Ram, and it runs Jaguar fine. Like Taha said even the beta's of Panther are faster then Jaguar. Expose is awesome, and is nice and smooth 95% of the time.

The only times I really notice it slowing down is when I have a bunch of apps open that use a lot of memory (like Photoshop and Illustrator at the same time). I'd get as much Ram put in it as you can and it'll be a great little machine.

Panther is great on my 500mhz iBook. It scores 10 points higher on xbench.
