[release] Deskblox 1.1

Hi all,

Version 1.1 of DeskBlox has just been released.

For anyone that is not familiar with DeskBlox, it's basically a Konfabulator clone for WinXP, Linux and OS X.

This version see many improvements and enhancements over the 1.0 release

From DeskBlox.com:

August 27, 2003

V1.1.0  This release improves the widget API, adds scrolling canvas, provides capability for automatic program and widget updates, and adds over 100 other news features and improvements to the program.

I've spoken to the developers of DeskBlox recently and they assure me that porting over widgets from Konfabultor is, for the most part, very easy to do as they have purposefully made their API and syntax quite like their competitors' product. They even offer assistance in porting over Konfabulator widgets!

Also, they mention that the screen painting issues that were present in 1.0 are mostly taken care of now and that they are working with the right people to see that any other issues of this sort are resolved quickly.

All and all, it sounds like we, XP users that is, now have a very capable Konfabultor clone that the developers promise will even surpass it in the near future.

So, if you like, head over to http://www.deskblox.com and grab the new release.

Best regards,

Grusic

Thanks for the info.

This version works GREAT in Linux. 1.0 was a little flaky, but this one is much faster and doesnt crash.

My only problem is that the Weather icons are ugly, but thats not their fault, theres no transparency in XFree86.

I also like that it comes with more widgets, the last one only came with Weather, clock, calender.

I downloaded this a while ago, thinking it looked pretty cool, and hey, new beta software, great stuff. It didn't take long to realize that the program was pure crap. The customization menu thing appeared completely off my screen, the exit option was unreachable, and the process had to be terminated from the task manager.

Willing to give this program a second change, I downloaded it again. I'm glad they fixed the context menu appearing off the desktop margins. Redraw problems are rampant on the widgets, especially the animated ones, such as the clock, or the news ticker, I think it also made my ObjectDock crash and burn when I tried to exit the program. The program noticably slowed down my computer, and I'm experiencing cursor drawing problems, though I think a restart will fix them. Most of these problems can be attributed to a bad vid card, or something related to how my computer is equipped, but the point is, it should not take a top of the line machine to be running something like this.

My "Demo" trial is now at 17 days remaining, and I see no reason to keep this program on my computer. Buy it? Don't make me laugh.

Wow! This app looks really cool! To bad i use a windows shell that doesnt actually have a desktop ;)

@mgehrett: I would try and send a mail to the developers with the error in.. They would probably know it :)

#51347

Ok it actually worked anyway. I just had to give it a try!

#51349

Good God! it aint free! :D

#51367

Unfortunately, it aint worth the price yet either <_

#51368

I'm not sure what the problem is. Konfabulator is not free either.

#51395

It's not so much that it costs, rather that it's a bit steep for it's current state of development.

#51399

Well if you are having some problems with it, I would suggest posting them on DeskBlox's forum.

If they are not aware of a problem then they can not fix it and therefore make the program better.

From what I understand, it was not smooth sailing for Konfabulator either when it was first released.

Also, I suspect the problems people maybe experiencing with DeskBlox are more due to the Java VM on ones system than the actual software itself.

is this program skinnable?

#51472

you can create widgets for it.

This program is like Konfabulator or DesktopX.
