I found this motherboard, whose BIOS has built in overclocking capabilities (MSI). The Socket it LGA775, and I stuck a 3GHz (800MHz FSB) Hyper-Threaded Pentium 4 Prescott in there. what would be the safest overclock speed for this chip? (Can go up to 8GHz O_O!)

I don't know if this qualifies as a *real* reply, but here it goes:
The thing I care most when I overclock a CPU or a GPU is it's temperature.
AFAIK the ideal temperature for an Intel CPU is about 40º, you should have no problems at 50º (mine is running at 51º) and maybe even you can get it to 60º.
So, just go and overclock it to 3.1 GHz, 3.2 GHz (use small steps), then keep your machine on and under heavy usage and check the CPU temperature (mine came with a hardware monitor in the CD accompanying the CPU box/blister, though you may use other app such as aida32).
To get even more speed, you'll need to low down the temperature even further. Some people says lowering the CPU voltage reduces the temperature, but that didn't work for me.
To reduce the temperature more, you will need to replace the CPU disipator with a better one, the CPU cooler with a bigger one, or even better replace all that with 'water' cooling (is not water, really, but looks like green water to me).
Bear in mind this: is not recommended to replace the cpu fan and dissipator if these one came in the CPU box (i.e. if they are the Intel factory ones). The CPU shouldn't work at more than 50º C. The more you overclock the CPU, the less... lifetime? it will have (I mean "vida útil" in english, don't know the expression).
Anyway, this time also AFAIK, your CPU will slow down a lot if it finds the temperature is too hot (it is pretty noticeable, you will find Windows slower than a snail against a Ferrari).

Hehe, Will I am actually using Ubuntu as this will be my server from here on out. My target temperature is around ~50 degrees as it already was, from past experiences as well as suggestions from friends. I'm happily overclocked at 3.3GHz, and I plan to keep it as it is right now. It only boosted temperature about 2 degrees in total, so it wasn't that bad
. I didn't want to go crazy because I don't want the fan blowing 100% (or 255 value) 24/7. So, I used sensors as well as fancontrol and pwmconfig to get the speed of the fans just right. 3.3GHz overclocked w/ HT, and not a big heat impact -- which leads to not having to listen to the equivalent of a chevy big block all day (and all night)

I still have to tweak sensors/fancontrol/pwmconfig for the case fan, but the case fan really isn't a necessity -- considering I can either fix it or just straight up not use it.
I also overclocked my RAM from the stock 333MHz to 667MHz. ![]()
The case fan makes hot air circulate out of the case.
If you remove the case fan you can consider getting one of those power supply which have one extra fan facing down, intended to extract air from the case.
Are you using some app to get temperature and fan speed graphics over time? I used to use HoTSaNiC but it didn't have a cute web interface.
I have been monitoring temp and speed for the past 6 or so hours, under different amounts of stress under my temperature fancontrol/pwmconfig. the maximum it's gotten so far is 66 degrees, while updating the OS and streaming a video over the network -- while copying 2GB of storage from a flash drive to the hard drive

I can't seem to get the case fan to work properly. The CPU fan is working splendid with fancontrol/pwmconfig, but the case fan (in both ports on the mobo, the one marked "auxfan" and the one marked "sysfan") doesn't seem to want to cooperate.
