Xp Pro Sp1 Cd Problem

I cant get windows to open my CD's automatically using the Auto Play feature. It worked fine in the non SP1 OS, but SP1 seems to create more problems than solve them in my opinion.

Also, did you hear of that MSBlast virus, well 2 of my PC's has the SP1 installed and the other 2 had the no SP1 patch installed. The virus only came onto the SP1 PC's. The non SP1 PC's were fine. How wierd is that!!

can you configure the autoplay from the drive icon in "my computer"? did you disable the shell hardware detection service?

Yeah I can set the Auto Play feature up, but doesent do what I tell it to do. So everytime I insert a cd it comes up 'What Do you want windows to do?' even after i've set it up.

And whats shell hardware detection ?

Thanks for your replys;)

shell hardware detection is a service. if you disable it (e.g. in services.msc), the autoplay function won't work. but since you get the prompt, this shouldn't be a problem.

that's really weird. i'll have to keep looking for an answer.

maybe try these:

1) this supposedly fixes autoplay, but i'm not sure how useful this is: http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBN/tip6900/rh6952.htm

2) try using tweakui to configure the autoplay feature.

3) try disabling autoplay completely, reboot, and see if it's completely disabled. then enable them, and reboot, and try again.

here's some more on autoplay. not really sure what the problem is, though.

edit: just scroll down (or search for) to find autoplay on that page.
