Very basics of basic customisation for basic beginners.
Ok, so you probably don't want to mess around with your system files if you can help it, so company Stardock is going to become your god very soon.
Stardock's Windowblinds allows you to change the whole theme of your PC, from the window borders, to things such as scroll bars, and buttons, and so much more. That's $20 out of your pocket, but well worth it, there's no better way to either Mac emulation, of just having a kickass desktop.
Stardock's next best product would have to be objectdock. This comes in free, and paid versions (Though tbh if you're not going to buy it, RocketDock, RK launcher, or something else is probably better. Paid version kicks ass, though) Is that also $20? In any case, you're not going to get the mac look without a dock.
For your handy finderbar (Thing at the top), the best thing to do it to get ObjectBar, also by stardock. This can actually rip the menus out of most programs and stick them in the bar, and although it seems a lot clunkier than anything else they've made, it gets the job done (And, with a bit of work, can be fairly pretty - fake transparent blur looks pretty neat on my personal theme). Also some amount of money.
For your instant messenger, the closest you'll get it with miranda-IM, which also happens to be the best IM out there, thanks to it's staggeringly small memory usage, and fantastic extendibility.
A good wallpaper is an essential, so poke around deviantart until you see something you like.
Customising outlook, (
), I don't think is possible, but Mozilla thunderbird does the same job, but better. That's free.
Firefox is your all round web browser, fully skinnable.
