And, they're comparable only in the sense they're releases of an OS, I suppose. I mean, they're worked on for different amounts of time, they add different things, one is free, and the other is not, (Though many would argue that windows service packs are mainly just bugfixes, optimisations, and bringing parts of the OS up to spec, whereas apple's releases add new features), so, they are not really comparable in any sort of real sense.

You explained it yourself. Apple's updates that you pay for add new features, which makes it equivalent more or less to going from XP to Vista. The updates that are free simply fix bugs, optimize it, etc. like you said. Just because Apple adds features more often than Microsoft doesn't mean they don't compare. It just means, well... let's just say it took Microsoft until 2007 to get features Apple had in 2003.

They add features, yes, but -less- features than a windows release. And while you say it took MS five years to add some apple features, there is a reason I'm using windows right now, and it ain't money 
They add the same amount of features, just not all at once, like Microsoft did with Vista. If you bought a new computer in December 2006 you were getting a 5 year old OS. And going from Windows 95 to 98 to 2000 didn't add many more features than a release of OS X.
I know you have your reasons for using Windows, but this isn't a Mac vs Windows debate, we're just comparing how they release their operating systems over time.

Now please lets bring this back on subject... a little talk of Windows core here and there is ok and adds interest... but this thread is not meant to be a flamewar comparing the different strategies of windows vs apple releases- This is meant to be a thread 'discussing' possible refinement's made to Leopard's core and what it could mean for the future of computing and OS X.

What about Blu-ray? Is it likely that Snow Leopard will support it? I mean they're optimizing the core and things like that, so maybe they will add Blu-ray support...

And, AFAIK, You can use a blu-ray drive on a Mac (I use one with a SATA --> USB adapter). I've never tried Blu-Ray formatted drives themselves.... but the drives themselves work.

Blu Ray support already exists in the current Leopard. However Im surprised the Mac Pro doesnt have the Build to Order option...
so yeah its all hardware limitations. However, you can add on an external Blu Ray drive (USB or the like) and use it.
Im guessing Apple (like me) thinks that Blue Ray is a waste of time... waiting for the next medium to come to speed (flash drives/ solid state / online perhaps?)
