How is the OS X dock arranged?

Just a question that I was wondering about. How does Mac OS decide the order of the dock? Is it always the same, unless you change it yourself, or does it arrange itself by how commonly you use the programs or something?

I assume it keeps the icons where you drag them, or rearrange them.

Yeah it keeps them however you arrange them.

Yep. And any apps that aren't in the dock, will be at the end of the dock when they open (right before the divider that separates apps from folders, docs, trash).

In OD I've always had them on the left...

Finder > Apps configured in whichever way you want > Dock separator > folders/stacks > trash

The default icon arrangement is pretty much how it is in the top image shown here http://www.markraats.com/OS%20X%20vs%20XP.htm.

Obviously I have elements of iWork installed so you would need to exclude those so the default Leopard order would be more or less as follows:

Finder, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Address Book, iCal, Preview, iTunes, Expose', Time Machine, System Prefs. After the divider you have two PDF documents (your os info) and then lastly the Trash Bin.

Your dock is also set without the enlarging icons as the default.
