is there a way to tweak pack's shell32.dll mod so that the memory space allocation problem disappears? i'd like to use the dll, but also retain the functionality of other programs like windows calculator.
and how can i check the dll versions and make sure they're the same? do they need to be the same?

i have a little program that does just this, and also disables file protection etc. it's by tokrachi(sp?) who released it, along with his mmx installer awhile back at neowin.
anyways, i've been using it since and i've never had problems with memory conflicts, replaced dlls, etc. i don't know the protocol for redistributing it, but if it's ok, i could upload it somewhere for you, as well as others who might be interested.
i've attached the readme.txt for further details.
as for the dll version, just check to see what version you have in you system32 directory. if you installed sp1, it should read 6.0.2800.1106. if you have the most current update from ms, it should read 1233 instead of 1106.

actually, i was looking through the text file, and it has some interesting points, but:
1) i want to keep my dll cache for safety reasons.
2) i can disable the wfp manually with the registry entry.
3) i always use a program called replacer for replace system files.
but i always thought that pack's shell32.dll mod was so big, it caused the memory space problems, so that, no matter how it was installed, it would always have that problem, i.e. the file itself. that's why i was asking if anyone knew how to tweak it so it wouldn't have that problem. it's interesting that you didn't have that, though, priest. hmm.
hey dreamz how many ram have u? 8mb lol. i say u packs shell32 is really small, my is about 35 megs and runs smooth with 256megs of ram.
I'd certainly like to have the file Priest, I tried the website for his e-mail and the account was suspended and neowin appears to be down.

i have 512mb ddr ram. i haven't tried the file yet because i read in the other thread (where he uploaded the files without installer) that some things won't work, like the windows calculator, so i've shied away from it until now.

i should clarify that this sfc file doesn't replace system files for you, it just disables file protection, memory allocation etc.
about the file size, i'm not qualified to answer, but i will say that my snowe based shell32.dll is 35 megs, and i've never had any problems whatsoever with it. there should be a way to tweak the registry so that you can use larger iconcache, and have no conflicts. unfortunately, i don't know how to myself.

Sort of.
If you replace the icons only with icons of the same size and colour depth, youre safe (thats whgat restorator automatically does anyway).
But then again... who would want that?

well, i don't want to lose the functionality of some programs, like windows calculator. is that the only workaround? and what else won't work after replacing the dll?

I solved that memory problem with the shell32.ddl by PACK , by replacing the AVIs , i used the snowe ones, and replace a few icons with only the size i wanted, but replacing only the AVIs solved.
I can now run the calculator and a few progs that need that memory space.

for me i can say packs modds are fully functional in all things on my machine, and i transferred some things in my german files and replaced some icons with sizes up to 128x and i have never had a memoryleak prob. the size of my files are sometimes bigger as packs originals.
isn't that a little big for shell32.dll? isn't the default windows one a little less than 8mb?
Unfortunately, I have the same problem. Whenever I try to install apps after the switched .dll, I get the memory error (and I have 1.5GB of DDR RAM). So, I have to restore the original dll, install the app, then replace the dll. It's time consuming and frustrating. Any fix on this would be great.

maybe you can just swap out some of the avis and icons, and it should work. right now i'm working on modding snowe2 shell32.dll and iceman's, so i haven't tried pack's yet.
that problem was the one deterrent for me, though.
Oh, I would love to see normal shell32.dll too, because every darn installer seem to drop down on my computer due to this memory aloocation problem
