animated or state-specific systray icons?

Hello,

Is there way to make animated or state-specific icons for a systray dock?

For instance if I am connected to the internet my little network icon in the systray has a globe overlay and the globe will not be there if I have just local network connectivity....or it has a yellow exclamation triangle for limited or no connectivity, etc.
