PS3 Firmware Updates 2.36 and 2.40

Sony has just announced that firmware update 2.41 will be available for the PS3. Right now, your PS3 should already have firmware update 2.41 installed.

PS3 firmware update 2.41 was released on July 8, 2008. Eric Lempel has made 2 videos introducing the firmware update as well as the features that will be included in it.

FIRMWARE UPDATE 2.41 (Released on July 8, 2008)

1. In-game XMB

2. Trophies

3. Have up to 100 PSN friends

4. Mini music control panel on XMB

5. Mini Google search panel on XMB

6. Date and time will be shown on XMB

7. In-game user music

8. Other minor enhancements

If you want to see the 2 videos in HD demonstrating the firmware update and Trophies, then click on the links below:

2. Trophies Video: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/30/...art-2-trophies/

***In-Game XMB will not work for all games. Mostly old games for the PS3 won't support In-Game XMB. For example, if you have Call of Duty 3, In-Game XMB will not show up. If you have Grand Theft Auto IV, In-Game XMB will work. If you have PS2 games, In-Game XMB is not supported.

***In-Game Custom Music will not work for all games. For Example, Grand Theft Auto IV does not support In-Game Custom Music.

***Trophies will not work for all games. Only PS3 Trophy compatible games will. Some games might receive an update enabling Trophies.

*Not all games will be compatible with In-Game XMB or will not allow In-Game XMB.

**In-Game User Music will not work in all games or will not allow In-Game User Music at all. A game update might be required for this feature to work.

Thats just garbage, I can kinda see how the music would be a problem, but the xmb should work in every game. 2.36 is out now, don't notice anything else changed tho.

grar. I've been waiting for this for a while. Now watch like 90% of all the games not be compatible >_>. My 360 can do it, what's keeping you, Sony?!

Well, watching the updates download and install has to be more fun than most of the games.

Firmware Update 2.40 has been suspended!!!

I am sorry to announce that the PS3 Firmware Update 2.40 has been taken out of the PS3 update servers. This means that if you try to update your PS3 now, it will display a message saying that you already have the latest version which is Firmware Update 2.36.

However, Firmware Update 2.40 was released last night and you could have downloaded it until this morning. This Firmware Update that users have download could have a potential bug that can break down your PS3.

The reason of why Firmware Update 2.40 was taken out is still unknown. Sony has gotten a lot of reports worldwide about their PS3 breaking down and not functioning properly.

For those who installed Firmware Update 2.40 last night or installed it this morning (including me), be sure to take care of your PS3!!!

Firmware Update 2.41 was released. Please update your PS3 as soon as possible!!!

You would think, you'd think, that it would be very rigorously tested before release.

I will update this thread when the issue has been resolved. But for now, either you wait or you take care.

Is there any way to downgrade? I REALLY don't want to have my PS3 break down on me ..

Don't believe there is. If your ps3 hasn't messed up already I think you're safe. Mine though has locked up when trying to launch flow :(

Most people that have reported that when Firmware Update 2.40 was installed on their PS3's, when they turn it on, the XMB menu does not show up. This makes the PS3 useless to control.

However, there is a solution which might sound terrible. It involves losing everything on the Hard Drive:

1. Turn off your PS3.

2. On the side, there should be an opening where the Hard Drive is.

3. Take out the Hard Drive.

4. Insert the Hard Drive again.

5. Turn on your PS3.

6. The PS3 will prompt to reformat the Hard Drive. Make sure you select "Full Format".

7. After its done formatting, the PS3 restarts and the Initial Setup appears.

8. Finish the Initial Setup.

9. After that, the XMB menu appears.

10. You are done.

These are easy steps. However, this is the only way to fix the PS3.

Yes, the problem occurs just after the update. If your PS3 boots, you are safe until Sony releases another update.
