Small font issue.

I'll cut to the quick... yesterday there was a thunderstorm. It got pretty severe, and happened too quickly. I went upstairs to see the weather, and realized i should shutdown my comp. So i ran back downstairs, it seems there was a lightning flash or something, and it beat me to my computer. It must've been a surge because my mom was on the phone during the whole thing and while she was talking, there was a "zZZZZzz" and the phone shut off. All the lights in the house flickered. Anyways, back to the computer, after the storm, i went to turn it on, only to realize that the IO switch in the back was switched off. Why did this happen? And also, the same day as the storm, I installed some fonts. When i rebooted after the storm, they won't appear in any application lists. So i deleted and re-added them.

I rebooted again just before cause of a windows update and they disappeared again. Anyone know the issue?

i'm probably wrong about but,

the "IO" switch went off because of the computers surge protector,

& windows isn't saving the changes you've been making, try a normal reboot that doesn't involve updates,

I don't think that's the case, because the fonts i installed are still in the fonts folder. They're just appearing in any lists or anything.

The IO switch however might be the case.

do the fonts appear in the apps before a reboot? if not, they're corrupt fonts, or, incompatiable w/ your machine for some reason, or, whereever you got the front from, had one name, and inside the font its named a much different name that appears in the apps

No, the fonts arent corrupted. I was using them before the bad shut down.

if you deleted the fonts directly, there are still font info in your registry. try un-installing and re-installing via the font manager in cp maybe?

No worries. Take a day to backup your shiz and another day to reformat and restore. not really that hard nor as bad as you think.

Find the registry entries that change every time you add them in, and put them in startup?

My vista install is showing it's cracks right now, half the time some things don't save, but as of yet, nothing critical.

It'll be a ***** getting everything back online, though, so I'm not reformatting.

Anyone know a way to backup all my FF settings? Including extensions and themes?

That'd change your registry every time you log in. One of the times, it might take, and you'd have your fonts next reboot.

But maybe it's the font loading part of the registry that's corrupted? And if i restart, that means the fonts will be gone again, and the registry change will mean that i'll need to reboot, it' just a vicious, vicious circle .

Hm... would there be any way to make this key read only? Something that would protect it from being edited...

OK new find, after checking my registry and seeing that the fonts in question were in the list, i decided to restart and see if they're still there.

I did, and they are. but the fonts still will not appear in any applications... so... if it's not the registry, what could it be?

check the Font Substitutes folder in the same Registry section. btw, what fonts are these? Open type, True type, Type 1? maybe re-zap your machine again? hehe.
