[release] Allweather Docklet

AllWeatherDocklet

-----------------

(a HACK for Jeff Bargmann's Weather Docklet)

http://richynorth.curvedspaces.com/AllWeat...therDocklet.zip

This is just a hacked version of the Weather docklet in the SDK, created primarily for my own use. I'm only releasing it as a stop-gap until a real programmer makes a fully functional docklet with international support! As such, I take no responsbility for *any* problems it may cause (though it works fine on my machine), and it's not as polished as it ought to be. This is only for people who want an international docklet now, and won't be updated or supported - as soon as someone else releases a proper product I recommend you use that.

The docklet appears identical to the original docklet, except instead of a zip code it will accept an international weather.com reference code. For example, London UK has the code UKXX0085. You can find the code for your city by:

1. Browse to http://uk.weather.com/weather/local/

2. Search using your postcode or city name in the local forecast.

3. Once you have found your city and have the forecast page up, cut the reference code from the address bar (between the / and ? symbols)

4. Paste this code into the zip code textbox and bon-voila!

Have fun!

Rich

err...

"You do not have access to this document" ???

Oops - my bad - forgot my host has case sensitive filenames. Try again now, the URL should be http://richynorth.curvedspaces.com/AllWeat...therDocklet.zip.

Also, the dll file has to go into *the same* folder as the normal weather docklet dll file, e.g. c:\program files\stardock\objectdock\docklets\weather\.

My question is if were in america we do the same thing except go to weather.com find out the zip code link and then paste that in?

#50527

a general question? does the docklet take IE proxy servers into account, or just try a direct connection?

it might be an idea to make that "set-able" from within the docklet

#50534

Hi everybody, for the people who see an ? in the docklet there's the fix:

Just REPLACE the default weather *.dll in the docklets folder, or make a new folder, put in it the new *.dll an copy inside the original icon folder from the defaul weather docklet.... is easy as it!

#50540

thank you a lot :)

what's the frequency of the updates for the weather ?

#50587

Hi guys

I'm glad you're finding it useful :D! It's a bit of a kludge, but if it holds you over, I'm happy to help! ;) Just to answer a couple of questions;

1. The update interval is hardcoded at 5 mins - thinking about it the weather really doesn't change that often (as least where I live!) and this might cause a bit of server strain. Maybe this should be user configurable or longer!

2. AFAIK, the docklet will use your IE connection settings. It uses the winsock interface, which IIRC (coupla years since I last used it) does inherit IE's settings - anybody care to confirm/correct?

3. Since the docklet uses the uk.weather.com site, US zip codes won't work. However, you should be able to get US city forecasts via uk.weather.com. Shortly after release, I realised that UK postcodes work in place of zip codes. Just use the first 'part' of the postcode in the zip code box! N.B. The weather data will probably come from the same place, but the label info will state your postcode and exact village/town/whatever!

Anywayz, have fun

Rich

i've got a little bug with your docklet : after switching from screensaver mode to normal windows mode, I can't right click on Allweather docklet in order to update or change location.
