In a talk with telmo, yesterday night, he told me to move to redhat, I checked redhat HCL, and it said my modem worked on 7.1, and I thought it would work in 8.0. So I installed it today, and my soundcard is detected by the ALSA thing, mandrake did the same, but now my soundcard doesnt even play or make a sound! And my modem wont work, after searching in google, my modem will ONLY work in RH7.1 only in that kernel version. And before I moved to redhat, I connected a FWA RDA modem, is a modem for phone line, and with a service it goes faster(the modem is not mine, nor attached to my computer or avaible for my use), and that modem, doesnt even gets detected on OS X or XP, and i attached it on my computer, clicked detect, and it WAS detected, I was shocked, it is nortel networks brand, but it doesnt even shows in the hardware lists!.

Also I cant access my windows files anymore on redhat. In mandrake I went to /mnt/nt and it shown my XP HD and it is files, now in Redhat, it wont show that way.

So my questions are:

How might I solve the ALSA problem?

Doesn an external modem has more chances to work than an internal?

Is there a way to access my windows files from redhat?

Should I keep redhat or mandrake?

1) For ALSA there are a few howto that you can follow to get the soundcard to work (my sound card always worked right the way with redhat)

2) An internal model is easier to detect, but you shouldn't have problems attaching an external.

3) For your windows files you need to mount your windows partition the same way you were doing in mandrake (man mount) and modify your /etc/fstab to mount it at boot time everytime.

4) none, go for debian!!

just kidding, distros are a personal preference, I recomemded redhat because is the one with wider support for newcomers to linux.

where are those how to? I search for my sound card there, and check the details? Would it be easy to follow, for what I read it might need to recompile the firggin kernel, and I dont know how easy it might be under redhat, if I get to recompile it, I might be able to solve my modem problem too.

your kernel already has ALSA support built into it so there is no need to recompile it.

What sound card do you have? does it work in KDE or GNOME? can you get it to play sounds from the command line?

Get a real Modem LOL ,but definetly U should try a getting a better modem

its a winmodem , but that one is the worst whenit comes to linux.

My soundcard did played on mandrake, while I had KDE, does the desktop interface affects if my soundcard play? I go to the souncard detector, and click on play test sound and nothing happens but the soundcard is detected. The soundcard is fm801 by fortemedia or forte media. It is supported by ALSA, because it was detected that way by mandrake, and it did worked, but in redhat, it doesnt play anymore, Im in the default environment called xwindow or something similar, the default desktop manager of redhat.

Im thinking seriously of buying a new modem, and throw that crap through the window! Im gonna check today to the newspaper classified ads, to see what I might get. It seems that 90% of the modems are winmodems!, it is hard to find a modem for linux, atleast on my area. Do you know if there is a chance of getting a US robotics modem to work with linux? But Im not sure which model is the one that the store sells, it might be one of those called windows modem. I can get a netodragon chipset, which is "motorola", and the same thing will repeat, so I need to switch brand, which can be sure to work on linux, on redhat better.

I would like to keep redhat, I like this Xwindow thing, but I dont understand why my soundcard doesnt gets to play.

X-Windows is the base system where the windows manager sits, the default windows manager for RedHat is KDE unless you tell it to use GNOME.

GNOME uses esound as the sound daemon

KDE uses arts? as the sound daemon

ALSA provides the basic API (libraries) for the sound deamon to use your sound card.

Also, you should consider doing some research on your problems before posting here, I found this in 2 minutes using google. You could also try some of the linux support forums, you'll have more luck that asking in a Graphic Interface skinning board.

I did searched, and went to the alsa prject page, to see the details of my soundcard, but It seemed hard to be done. So I need to swithc to KDe or GNOME? Is this a solution?

like Telmo said about X-windows ,it depends on how U choose ur installation ,whether u did it to automtically log in or not to a GUI enviroment .and like I said before check at linmodems.org ,they r the best when it comes to information about modems working in linux,and try going to linux****ie.org and theyr forums search for any specifc problem U r having and U will see that many ohter people had the same or similar problem and many of them have solved their problems.try to iether mandrakeuser.org or redhat might have a forums as well,is not that we dont want to help u but sometimes a little searching is good for the soul.
