Windows XP SP3; available April 29th

It will be available in early Summer as an automatic update. Windows XP SP3 includes all previously released Windows XP updates, including security updates and hotfixes, and select out-of-band releases. Microsoft says it's not adding significant Windows Vista functionality to Windows XP through SP3. However, SP3 does include Network Access Protection (NAP) to "help organizations that use Windows XP to take advantage of new features in the `Windows Server 2008 operating system." Further, Windows XP SP3 does not include Windows Internet Explorer 7. The service pack does, however, include functionality previously released as updates, such as the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0 and the Microsoft Core XML Services 6.0 (MSXML6). Users can download these updates and apply them individually to computers running Windows XP SP2. Windows XP SP3 also includes a small list of previously unavailable functionality, including NAP and an update of Windows Product Activation.

Windows XP SP3 also includes improvements to black hole router detection (detecting routers that are silently discarding packets), turning it on by default. In addition, the Security Options control panel in Windows XP SP3 now has more descriptive text to explain settings and prevent incorrect settings configuration.

Those running earlier versions of Windows, such as Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (or even XP with no service packs :o!) will seemingly have to update to Service Pack 2 before updating to Service Pack 3.

So this will be an update or a full XP SP 3 operating system?

#498650

An update. Obviously PC's shipping with XP on the will have SP3 on them, though.

#498651

yawn...let me know when sp4 is available...

I asked Ballmer about SP4, and he said,"Go, get Vista"... then he tortured me with this :

#498659

I'd really like to know how SP3 and Flyakite will play together.

I'd more like to know what new features SP3 offers or if there are any minor UI improvements than compatibility with flyakite. Once i know that, then ill worry about flyakite, although i dont really care since i dont use it xD

when is flyakites uxtheme patcher going to be updated?...im not getting sp3 until it gets released :/

Already well aware of what SP3 brings, so I want to know more about Flyakite's compatibility. Then again, Flyakite is old as hell and I should probably stop using it regardless.

thats basically what i meant lol. It might not be compatible at all so its either switch to SP3 and drop fak or keep sp2 :P

Flyakite has been no issue with RC1 & RC2 of SP3 except the uxtheme patching. But you can google for UXtheme for SP3 and get your fix. :)

I know cause I've been using SP3 RC2 on one of my systems.

How about the bug where computers with Flyakite installed can't install certain pieces of software?

#498694

certain pieces of software?

What pieces?? any names?

I haven't faced anything as yet.

One widely known thing is, if you choose 128x128px icons for shell32.dll from flyakite installation options. Certain softwares stop working (MS Calculator for instance). Remedy to this is that you select 48x48px icons while installing Flyakite.

That could very well be the problem, as I did indeed select 128x128. Can I re-do the Flyakite setup and select 48x48, or do I have to reinstall the entire thing?

Edit: nevermind, it's already set at 48x48. Some of the programs I can't install: the Paint.net update from 3.22 to 3.30, Dell's Bluetooth drivers for my laptop.

#498703

hmmm... which laptop is that??

I could very well install Dell's bluetooth drivers on my XPS M1210.

#498710

Inspiron 6000. They used to install just fine, but after a recent reformat and an installation of Flyakite, no such luck.

#498713

Install linux?! :D?

lol, someone had to say it..

#498722

If I have sp3 beta version do I unstall that version to install the final version ?

#498732

You can just upgrade from the Beta to the Final Version when it comes out.

#498740

There won't be a SP4. SP3 is just a collection of various fixes released between SP2 and now. All of Microsoft's real efforts are going into Vista, Server 2008 and the upcoming Windows 7.

#498742

I'm fine as long as i can have my UXtheme patched...otherwise, **** it.

In the meantime, I still have problems.

Good grief, I wish Apple would hurry up and release the redesigned MacBooks as rumored so I can go buy one.

#498768

Be aware that the Service Pack 3 UXTheme.dll has already been patched by the individual who did all of the original UXTheme patches. As long as Flyakite knows where to look, he can update his patcher accordingly.
