How do iPods "name" their songs?

If you've ever ventured into the Music folder of your iPod's iPod Control directory, you'll notice that there's a list of folders labeled F0 - FXX (XX being any number). And, inside those folders contain your media. So my question is.... how do iPods name your songs and movies? All of them are 4 random letters long like JFHS.mp3 or QOKD.mp4, etc.

I'm curious to know so that, in the event i acquire a song on another computer, i can just go to Music and add the file myself. But to me it wouldn't make sense just adding the file you have without renaming it to the specified parameters.

So does anybody have any ideas?

A wile back i had the same question. I looked for patterns in all of the songs, but i never really could figure out how/why they are named so weird, other than the fact that apple doesn't want people sharing music.

i just use a program called MediaMonkey which brings up all the true names of the songs on your ipod and also lets you copy the song from the ipod directly to any other computer, unfortunently when it copies over it doesnt change the file name and you have to do it yourself.

i dont really want to use another app for it, if i need to then its pointless. I might as well just copy to the songs to my iPod's drive and add em via iTunes when i get back to my computer...

Although you mentioned that you don't need another app for it... I would still suggest PodPlayer.

It's lightweight, doesn't require installation, runs from your iPod, and can copy song from your iPod to your local hard-drive. I've been using it since the day I bought my iPod, and it's probably one the best thing around.

just copy the whole of your iPod's music folder into your itunes one and im pretty sure it copies accross the tags into itunes... from memory. Its been a while since i moved to my new pc.
