Webhosting

Hey all -

I'm currently researching a webhosting/domain registration provider so I can run a low-level website. I just want to have some space to host music I've recorded, images I've created, and pictures I'll take while I'm studying abroad in London. I'm looking at hotspotwebhosting.com, and eveything looks perfect there. However, since I'm new to this, I'm a little wary. So I turn to you - are there any providers I should definitely use or definitely avoid? What prices are reasonable? What is one thing a **** should know before he starts something like this?

I have been with these guys for a little while, and have found them to be very classy:

The feature set is very nice, and I have found the uptime to be almost perfect.

The tech support is pretty nice as well. I had some issues when I was switching the site to them, and I always got very prompt replies to my questions. The guy I was talking to was knowledgeable too - I mentioned that I was using phpnuke and phpbb and he knew about the specific issues I was having with those applications.

Customers interact with their accounts with something called "cpanel," which is really keen. I would recommend asking prospective hosts if they offer something similar.

The pricing is reasonable. The 15 US dollar plan should cover most personal sites. And if you pay in advance, you save some money.

I would be astounded if you can find a better hosting deal than the one offered at http://www.hasweb.com/ - their domains are not the cheapest, but the hosting is amazingly priced, and is speedy. I have 200MB webspace, 4GB data transfer per month, a plethora of features (SQL included) and all for an annual fee of $19.95.

hey clockwise, how much is domain registration at intense-servers? I don't see a price list, just an order form.

@mike273 - the blurb at HASweb says it is intended for intermediate-knowledged customers. I would say I'm somewhere between retarded and ignorant, but a fast learner. Do you still recommend them? Their plans are incredible.

I don't know hoe much the domain registration is at Intense Servers. But if you want to register one cheap, just do it over here:

http://www.godaddy.com/

GoDaddy charges 8.95 US dollars per year.

GoDaddy has a nice interface that you can use to point the domain to the proper host, along with a few other goodies. Registering WITH your host is generally a little more expensive, and not necessary at all.

(oh: one other thing I like about Intense Servers: you can get tech support via MSN messanger. Real time support!)
