iTunes #1 Music Retailer in the US

Apple's iTunes Music Store is now #1 music retailer in the United States, beating Wal Mart for the #1 spot, according to the NPD Group's MusicWatch survey, with 19% of the market. The survey covered the music sold to date between January and February 2008.

To date, Apple says iTunes has 50 million customers and has sold more than 4 billion songs from a catalog of over than 6 million choices.

Wha? They're all excited over a study that only covered a ONE MONTH period?? That's hardly impressive, maybe if it was over the span of a year or more, but one month (two at most)? There's hardly any context with that.

Some analysts have pointed out that iTunes sales for the first two months of the year were probably boosted in part by sales of iPods and iTunes gift cards over the Christmas period, and Apple may not be able to maintain its number one position long-term.
