I have seen widgets for dashboard that allow you to send text messages from your mac, using your phone's bluetooth. (Which would probably require a particular type of phone or some extra software on it or something...)
So I thought, why not do something like this on an iPod Touch? In other words, it brings most of the capabilities of the iPhone to your iPod Touch.
The way it would work is, you have your phone in your pocket/bag/etc with bluetooth on, paired with your iPod Touch. Whenever you get a text, it is bluetoothed to your iPod Touch to be read on that. You can reply, in the exact same way you would with an iPhone, and it just bluetooths it back to your phone to be sent. When a call comes in, it displays it on your iPod Touch (This may be difficult, as iPT's don't have a speaker or vibrate, but perhaps the phone rings and you answer it with your iPT...) and when you answer you are using your iPT like a bluetooth headset. For internet, if your phone can connect to the internet, just connect via bluetooth and your iphone gets the connection through your phone (this has been possible for ages, with phones and PDA's/laptops, etc.)
And now since the iPhone SDK is out is should now be possible. So rather than replacing your phone, get an iPod Touch and this software if something like it comes about and use that!
Now you can all tell me why my idea sucks and it will not work =]
