Invalid volume free block count error

My 80 GB (74.21GB Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) hdd has only 36 GB of data on it, which should leave 38 gigs of free space, but info's displaying 55.6g used with 18.7 free.

Running Disk Utility; "repair disk" button was grayed out, and on verify disk I got this;

I can't run a repair (I'm assuming you cant repair an active disk) & I cant do a total reformat because I (currently) have no externals,

Does anyone know a way to repair the disk, I found one old article on apple explaining a similar error but, not really clarifying it,

Please help

I had some issues like that.

What you have to do is stick your OS X DVD in your drive, then reboot your computer holding the "C" key. This will boot it from the CD. Just keep holding it until you see the install screen.

If my memory serves me correct, the first screen is like a "hello" screen, then the next is a language screen. You want to accept/continue on both of those screens.

Once you're at the next screen, go to Utilities in the menu bar, and choose "Disk Utility" from there. And repair your disk from in there.

Hope that helps.
