Well basically I'm either going to buy an iPod touch or an iPhone (unlocked as I hate O2). But I'm really stuck on what to buy.
I listen to loads of music so the 32GB touch would be good, but I also need a phone lol.
So I either buy an iPhone (at the risk of it being updated soon) that does it all or getting the touch and a new phone.
Opinions?!?
I would seriously hold off of buying one until it gets out of the 1st Gen. There are some things that will get ironed out in the next version.
I own the 8GB iPod touch. I would have waited for the second gen, but I couldn't wait any longer (I was ranting how all I wanted was an iPhone, minus the phone when the iPhone was introduced). And to be honest, that is large enough for me. Granted I can't have many videos, but if you keep your music managed in playlists so you can easily swap out sets of songs, it would be fine. I can't imagine having that much music and there not be some songs you would skip if they came up to play.
Here is what you don't get by getting an iPod touch:
- Obviously, no phone.
- No TXT messaging, obviously
- Either WiFi, or no internet.
- No camera.
- No speaker, must use headphones.
- You will have to pay for the upcoming 1.2 Firmware update in June. Cost unknown, but to get the apps from the previous upgrade it was $20. So hopefully Apple will be more forgiving, but it is all up in the air. (Note: New iPod touches will have these apps (or get them for free if you purchased within the 2008 year)
Everything else is pretty much identical (other than specific details). The apps released with the SDK will be able to work on both products (as long as they don't utilize the camera or phone, and you have WiFi for the apps that use it).
If you need a phone and don't mind paying the monthly payment. Feel free to go for the iPhone. I went into it not wanting the phone, so I can't really help you there.
Yea rumors are that there'll be a new iPhone this June with 3G. I am waiting for that.

I already have an 8GB iPhone.
I dig it.
I have my complaints, but the thing does what I need it to do.
3G is not important to me, so it didn't factor in. Call quality was my concern and I'm happy with it.
I'm running a 16gb iPod Touch, and although it holds nowhere near my entire library of music for which I'd need a 160gb Classic, the hacking possibilities far outweigh the limited library. (Tap Tap Revolution and NES emulators w00t) I was massively tempted to go for an iPhone but the tariff cost is somewhat extortionate without any subsidy on the hardware.
As such I got a Touch for myself at Christmas and I'm waiting around for the 3G iPhone. Partly because of 3G but I'm also waiting for a possible price drop and It's quite possible by then they'll have squeezed a 32gb flash card in there for your uses as well. For me, carrying two items around with me isn't a big deal. Wait around until June, I'd say.

sure, the ipod touch is cheaper... but ... the iphone is like... everything in one.
you dont need to take a camera, phone and ipod with you... you take a single iphone. Its a convenience thing.
Especially if your always in transit, it saves you lugging round a bag of gear.

Thats one of the reasons I was stuck and couldn't decide. I will probs wait until June and get the new iPhone when it is released.

I tried an iPhone the other day at the O2 store, it was SO cool! I even looked at one of my videos on Youtube =P
And all the other people in the shop were like "Wow...your videos are great!"...Heheheh.

Iphone has more options which have been stated above.
The Ipods might have more storage, but you probably wont listen to all 32Gb in one day anyway.
On Iphone you can change your songs daily, so you won't need too much storage!
I have the iPod Touch and my son has the iPhone. I'm very jealous with one exception. The Touch is complete at purchase and the Phone is a 2yr (~$1500) commitment to AT&T which is not as good as Verizon. The problem with the Touch in my opinion is that it's wifi only and when you have the phone, you can use wifi OR AT&T.
Here's what I did: I purchased a small portable device from Cradlepoint that works great to give me a hotspot anywhere with the use of my Verizon USB720 (data card) which I already had for my MacBook. Now all I'm missing is the camera and I have one of those too.
Advantages: Keep Verizon and create a hotspot anywhere for my laptop and Touch and more devices of mine or my friends.
Disadvantages: I have a lot of equipment to haul around (iPod Touch, phone, data card, portable router, oh and the camera)

Because, without the iPhone, we wouldn't essentially have the iPod touch.
Also to make phone calls and recieve and send SMS messages.
You also need WiFi. If you were in your home or at Starbucks, you would be fine. But anywhere that doesn't have an unsecured WiFi signal (which is about 99% of the globe) you need the data plan from the phone service to use the EDGE network and get online. The iPod touch does not have this.
