Objectdock 0.99 Bugs & Feature Request

With a great release by Jeff, thought id take some time out, and post some bugs, thoughts and requests for the future Objectdock. :smartass:

Problems I've run into so far:

1. Seems when I add albeik's capture docklet, and either try and save my dock's settings as a theme OR close the dock altogether, the docklet causes the dock to crash. the docklet itself works fine. Perhaps it was made using a pre-release SDK or something. :canadian:

2. When I restart the dock after a crash, I see a task button, or whatever its called, on my taskbar that says "Recovered Settings" but no dialog comes up. I then right click and choose "Close" and itll close the dialog, and my dock is back with my settings intact. Well sort of. :6

3. After problem described above, the dock will have my shortcuts on it, but in a reverse order. So if I have a "My Computer" icon on the left of the dock, itll be on the right. And the "Recycle Bin" icon, which sits on the right, is now on the left. To get around this, I load up the theme which I was able to save before all hell broke loose.

4. The weather docklet, as great as it is, seems to slightly degrade performance on the dock. Does is check the weather.com site constantly to keep the weather's status on the dock current with the one on the site? If so, perhaps a delay option would be a great addition to the docklet.

5. Bug that is still here, since as far back as i can remember. when the taskbar is disabled, the separator remains, but is on the far left of the screen (if dock is at bottom of screen). isnt there a way to just hide it completely instead of just reposition it away from the dock?

----------

And somethings I'd love to see:

1. Separators! yea i know everyone wants these.

2. Autohide option in separator right click menu.

3. Folder contents menus.

4. Ability to run more than one instance.

5. Quicker response time on mouseover. With all the smoothness, it seems its a bit slow when i move my mouse across the dock (compared to YzDock's almost instantaneous response time, but thats just my opinion so please dont hate).

6. More docklets. Not really a feature request, but i thought id just throw that in there. One's i would love right now: iCal, Volume, Drive and Mail. Also, didnt i read somewhere on the forum that jeff was working on a AIM docklet? if so, wonder how thats going...

----------

Misc comments:

Great release. Almost made me wanna switch back (Objectdock user since 0.51) from YzDock. The ability to not be able to add more separators just really bugs me. On my YzDock(s), separators keep my programs and links nice and organized in different sections.

I see in the changelog that there are now "Item Backgrounds (tiles)". dont see how to use these yet tho, or exactly what that means. perhaps im missing something? :canadian:

Now for a help request. Can anyone with access to a mac running osx send me images of the Dock menu in Finder? The one in the Apple menu on Finder? Now with the command line options, i can finally control Objectdock's settings from Objectbar, which would be a great addition to my current-work-in-progress Orbital Objectbar theme.

Again, a really, really great release by Jeff. if i can think of anything else, ill add it here. I look forward to a future update with at least some of my requests in, and i know a few other people would also like some of these in as well.

:sigh: its 4 AM. gotta sleep...

The 'Tiles Background' can be found in the Background droplist - it's one of the backgrounds. Looks nice, gives perspectives, but it sometimes decreases my performance.

#49414

Feature List:

a. Seperators!

b. Tutorial on how to build new "attention" effect.

Cause I found this Panther dock animation movie, which I think can be implemented using the existing effects (black glow once + lower bounce).

With certain backgrounds, I get part of the background image showing on the very leftmost part of my screen when I pull my dock up.

when I add albeik's capture docklet, and either try and save my dock's settings as a theme OR close the dock altogether, the docklet causes the dock to crash.

yes. It crash really bad, even when you copy the dll required on the docklect directory or the objectdock directory

Seems all attention effects other than "bouncing" and "side-to-side" don't work for "Custom Engine" mode.

Does that happen to you guys?

OD needs DRAG AND DROP FILES TO DOCK OBJECTS (programs AND folders)...also selectable delay for weather checking

And a more reliable way to create a folder/drive/my computer objects...when I drag and drop to the dock they don't open reliably on the first click...this problem's been in OD forever. I shouldn't have to go in and edit every object to put "Explorer.exe" in to make it work...OD should handle it.

I want OD to succeed and it gets better with every version, but I see some of these things as basic functionality that should already be in there and in this new version we get stuff like "glowing" effects that I could do without. Granted, it's cool looking, but not essential.

well the only bug i get is that when you have alot of iconsin ur dock and you zoom and the icons go past teh screen the docks background cuts off near the edges so the icons go off the background.. if you know what i mean

and also when you drag an icon with the indicator udner it.. the indicator sticks with the icon and if you drag the icon away off the dock the indicato still follows

also... my only request would.. atleast ad a feature to raise the height of where the icons sit.. cause i dont like how the sindicators overlap my icons

Excellent work jeff

The only problem I've run into, is that I feel that it runs slower than past versions, I hope the performance can be enchanged in nexte versions, because I really feel that it aint that smooth as before, and that really keeps me away from usign it.

Does anyone feel that is slower?

#49645

Adobe Photoshop seems to take a lot longer to load when I have the dock running.

#49646

yeah actually iv been experiencing some slowdowns like really noticable choppyness

its weird hasnt happend on earlier versions

-bolero

#49649

it kinda skips some frames to me, when I move it, kinda choppy as Bolero describes.

#49650

continuing my first post:

7. one thing ive been thinking about for a while is, what i'd like to call "panel skinning". have the dock use 3 images for its background. use one image for the background behind the users shortcuts, docklets, etc. another image for the separator. and finally, a completely different image for the taskbar section. decided to make a diagram to illustrate this idea:

panelskinningdia1.jpg

why? because i think that the separator image should NOT overlap the background image as it does now, and has done so since the begining. why? :canadian: because skinning the dock would be greatly improved this way. i have another reason, but cant really say, until/unless this feature is added.

bottom line: NO SEPARATOR IMAGE OVERLAP ON BACKGROUND IMAGE. :dr_evil:

#49655

thats actually a really good idea

just back back and going to bed right now so don't have time to respond to all the posts... but for the last one about the background.... sorry but I don't know if this is going to change anytime real soon. Might look into an alternative system such as that however the speed benefit from doing the background the way i'm doing it now is major.

alright, bed for now... i've read all the posts so far and have words to say to all (many starting with: they're on the list and definitly are going to be added) but exhaused so yep. g'nite

thanks for the thread k, after they spammed the hell out of the other one with requests and tons-o-BS.

/my request is that ppl take time to use jeffs new app, grasp its concept, use the thing a little bit before being unsatisfied in 5 min in something that took the man months of preparation. thanks.

#49710

I'm an OD user since 0.51. OD is turned off in my pc only when I play a game. This is the most useful app for me right now. I'm so happy with this GREAT job Jeff.

The only thing that doesn't work for me is the bouncing effect. I wondering how I can change the height of this effect when its in hidden mode. Of course, if there is a way to do it, a hidden preference I mean:

bouncing.jpg

I dunno what happend with this. It worked until 0.70. Maybe a wrong pressed key? :baby:

My opinion:

1. The most fastest dock. (for my pc configuration)

2. Have taskbar.

3. In combination with shortpopup OD rox. (Jeff, u really need to embbed this kind of functionality someday)

4. It's light

5. It's STABLE

THANK YOU JEFF, we luv ya

AHAHAHAHAHA

Does anyone feel that is slower?

Yup - it's very slow now - even opening kkmenu takes a good 5 seconds, whereas it was instant on the previous release.

#49758

Just gone back to 0/95 because 0.99 is too slow to use.

It keeps using 90% of my CPU when I'm not even doing anything to it - for example I just copied a couple of files from one folder to another in explorer, when everything froze. I look at the task manager and OD is jumping from 90-97% CPU.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Maybe it doesn't like Win2k anymore :(

#49766

thanks for the quick response jeff. just thought id throw that idea out there. oh well, guess i can dream. ;)

i absolutely love this dock. i decided to use it as my main dock again along with one yzdock instance for apps and games. along with my orbital objectbar theme, which i adjusted specifically for use with the new objectdock (finally added the dock menu, as it appears in OSX's finder), i am truly happy with my computer's configuration.

cant say this enough jeff. thank you so much for your hard work. i look forward to the release of 1.0, and future versions of objectdock. take care.

#49768

Does anyone else get this problem? When I try to enable 'Lock Dragging' so that the icons do not move off or around the dock, I find that I'm unable to actually drag anything into the recycle bin!

Just my 2 cents...
