I'm not trying rip up scars of a debate that has been discussed here before. But since I'm relativly new in these forums, I'm going to ask my Q. So having searched and read some of the debates on NFR, I'm still unclear on whether or not its ok to release a piece of work, modified for personal use, but with original authors permission?

Well depends. If its for personal use.... well you keep it for yourself basically. BUT If you mean you modded it for personal use then decided to release it, the author of the original work has given you permission to do so, then go right ahead.
NFR= Not For Release, there for you made it yourself for personal use. Modded it from another artists work and don't have permission to release it.
Thx for the reply. That was as I thought then. Now, just for the sake of my inner peace ;-) : What if the author can't be asked...as in the original piece is e.g. three years old and the author hasn't been around for ages? I mean if I can't get a hold of him. Then I absolutely keep the modded piece to myself, right?

I suppose you should ask yourself the the question, how would you feel if someone modded and released something you took time to create and share.
Some people take this as form of flattery other are offended.
It doesn't really matter on the time frame, if your in doubt keep the mod to yourself. You never know when things like these can come back and bite you on the butt.
Yeah, thats what I figured...It would be kind of lame to make a few minor mods to something and then just throwing it outthere.

if you like a previous artists work that much... use it as inspiration and the start from scratch, incorporating the changes you wanted to make to the original. it may look similar, but at least it's all your own work! (if you want to release said work, that is!)
