Galaxy Linux Alpha 1 Release (Phoenix Galaxy)

Hey everyone! I Alex and for a few weeks now I have been developing Galaxy Linux, a Multimedia Creation distribution based on Ubuntu Linux. The release of Phoenix Galaxy (Alpha codename) has been much anticipated over at Galaxy GUI. A few days ago I opened a thread there requesting volunteers to test the Alpha release of Phoenix Galaxy. Unfortunately I received minimal response and only three people were interested in participating. The community at Galaxy GUI is still small. So then I though... well you know... I need more people! I had started a thread to find out what the community thought that the bookmarks should be by default. A few people posted aqua-soft as one of the bookmarks they would like to have included in Pheonix. I decided it would be alright so i included it. Now, i had never actually come to AS and participated in the community what so ever. I've had things released here by alxz310 (The creator of Galaxy GUI and also one of the Alpha Testers at the moment) but never actually was here. I was in desperate need of some people to test the Alpha release. Immediately I thought, Aqua-Soft! I had heard great things about here and I am deeply hoping each and everyone of them was true. I guess I should probably tell you why I'm posting, but you probably can already guess why.

I need Alpha Testers! This will be first come first serve basis but if you register over on Galaxy GUI and post in the Alpha Testers thread under the Galaxy Linux category, you will definitely be accepted and also, will be first in line for the Beta release. You will be playing a major part in the development of this distribution. I appreciate anyone who is willing to help! There is one other thing I need to ask though. I would like to release here at AS the OS it's self. Alpha and Beta releases would stay on Galaxy GUI because that is the home base for this distrobution although I would like the release the Final version release here on Aqua soft as well as Galaxy GUI. I would very much appreciate this opportunity! Thanks much! Screenshots at my deviantart page. My dA account is exuberance10000.

What is the difference? What did you do to Ubuntu to make it Galaxy linux? And how did you get system requirements that low?

What kernel version are you using?

#494254

I'd like to try it out.

I'd like to try it out.

Sign me up!

sure, did you already register at galaxy gui?

#494259

I don't get it. What makes this distro different from Ubuntu? What makes this Galaxy linux and not Ubuntu?

Hard to try to alpha test on something I'm not quite sure what it is ;)

#494261

I did now.

Looking forward to testing :)

Alright, the difference is that for people who are media developers (almost everyone on this forum) need a suite of applications to work with right? This brings that suite of applications to them for absolutly no cost. Just pay for internet and your set. This comes with video software, graphics software, 3d software, audio software. It a studio of what a media developer NEEDS. i hope you will be willing to test this for us. Much appreciated if you do ;)

EDIT: i just read some other responses. its kernel 2.6 and they low cause linux doesnt need much

#494285

lol....

So Galaxy Linux is Ubuntu with a bunch of slipstreamed software?

If that's the case, then the minimum requirements should be the same as Ubuntu's, right?

#494287

actualy, i managed to make it a TAD bit lower by downloading some seperate drivers ect. Ubuntu doesnt have ANY propiotary software at ALL. that limits some of the stuff. Also a bunch of the software im using is expiramental so this alpha is bound to have bugs. Also an update for ya'll

I finally released Galaxy Linux Alpha 1 (Phoenix Galaxy) this morning before class began. Ive sent the link to the people interested and have asked them to register on Galaxy GUI so that they may report bugs and stuff. Any bugs should be reported to GALAXY GUI. NOT UBUNTU SUPPORT FORUM. If you do they'll just curse you. You're no longer using ubuntu. Your on Galaxy Linux!!!

Ubuntu doesn't have any proprietary software because it's an open source distro. That's why they have the Restricted Drivers Manager. After installation, you can enable all the proprietary drivers you need, and then you aren't limited to anything.

What software are you using that is experimental? If the software is experimental, it doesn't mean that your 'distro' is experimental, it's just that... The software is.

You're no longer using ubuntu. Your on Galaxy Linux!!!

I'm gonna have to disagree. None of your own coding went into this project. All that really went on was slipstreaming some software and some non-supportable software...

In the end, you're still on Ubuntu.

Yes, you can call this a "flavor" of ubuntu that looks better and works a bit better. Yes, some of the software is experimental

Basically ubuntu with cool theme, extra drivers, functionality, some software and media-centered ;)
